I understand the decision was made passenger = lined green, mixed traffic = lined black and fright = black.

The Brits were classified MT, but wore lined green livery. Was that just because they were large?
Jinties were black, but Panniers word lined black even though the two types were employed on similar duties.
USA tanks; is my memory false or were they all green? Were any painted black (Lined or not)?

Only a small number of panniers were lined black, supposedly because they were used for ECS movements at Paddington. I don't know what the deal was on the Midland Region, but on the Western, lined green replaced lined black for mixed traffic engines from c.1956. Prior to this there were cases where some mixed traffic classes, such as the 43xx's, were plain black, with a very small number being lined. Anyway, while I can't help your Jubilee query, the bottom line is that the regs didn't necessarily stay the same over time, assuming of course that they were always adhered to in the first place.

IIRC, Mr Maunsell's 'green tanks' were black and his express 4-4-0 V Class, MT black (well, for a while, at any rate!).

USA tanks were unlined black initially, later some were green, I think ones which were transferred to the service department and given DS numbers. Tom will know better than me. The Western seemed to do locos green which would have been black everywhere else, like 1400 tanks and prairies.

Mr. Urie's 'Green Tanks' were originally green; his 'Black Tanks' were originally black. A contretemps with a certain 'Bohemian little corporal'* led to the H16's becoming black. Mr. Riddles (or probably his departmental accountant) kept them all black.

One of the green tanks (30520) ended up erroneously in lined mixed traffic livery at its first BR repaint in 1948, and stayed that way until next painted in 1951 when it became plain black.

I've got a photo in front of me of a Terrier (No. 78, "Knowle") in early BR condition, lined black, no apparent totem on the tank side, and numbered 32678 in large Gill sans letters on both the bunker sides (not unusual) and the back of the bunker, Brighton-style (very unusual). The KESR missed an opportunity, IMHO, in their latest overhaul to have presented the loco in a form that was entirely prototypical but would have had the rivet counters spitting tacks.

Unlined black was the norm for USA tanks. but in 1963, some were painted into lined green. 30064 and (I think) 30072 were among their number and also, the two Ashford works shunters. I read somewhere that the green in question was Bulleid Malachite rather than standard BR green, but the colour in the few colour pictures I've seen of 30064 on railtour duties doesn't look much like the colour 34081 is currently painted in. Mind you, as I'm a bit colourblind, I'm probably not the best judge of such matters, but I can assure you, it's definitely not black!

I'm thinking back a long way, to somethinmg that I've had non reason to think about, but I do seem to remember at least one of the USA's in their early days at Rolvendon being in either Malachite green or at least a reasonably 'Bright' shade, I'd have said that it hadn't been re-painted at this time, but I really cannot be definite.

The two Ashford Works shunters and the latterly Lancing Works shunters were green as were 30064 and 73 at Eastleigh etc. DS 235 was repainted at Ashford having orange lining as opposed to the yellow of the others applied at Eastleigh. I cant remember where its is referenced but the green was BR Coach Green referred to as Malachite, so not the same as Mr. Bulleid's preferred shade.

30072, theGuildford shed pilot, was unlined black to the end, albeit kept unusually clean for that time. Here it is on 30/4/66. I think the KWVR painted it green like 30064 in the 1980s but it was never green in BR service.

A couple of memorable paint jobs that take me back to my train spotting days all those years ago.

Didn't Liverpool Street have a station pilot in GE blue at one time in BR days?
