Surprised this hasn't prompted more interest on here to be honest - I'm quite a impressed by the RPSI's setup, and they've got a long way with this particular project with very little public fanfare (quite a big lump of it is currently lurking not far from my office, awaiting further assembly over the next month or so)

Indeed, especially with there being some crossover to the proposed Fowler tank loco I thought more people would have shown an interest. There were 150 attendees at the meeting, but if the response on here is anything to go by, they were all presumably from this side of the Irish sea!
We were shown some lumps that I guessed you might have had a hand in - great looking work. They'll look even better when they're attached to the other large lumps at Whitehead :)

Well I was one of the 150, from the GB side of the Irish Sea too. I was impressed by the video and their enthusiasm. Let's hope all goes well for them.

I was one of the attendees, living in Greater London. One significant point (if I understood aright) is that they have refrained from appealing for funding for this project to avoid diverting potential donations from other, more urgent, needs. Despite that they have a lot of the pieces to be eventually put together into a new loco and they are now happy to accept donations for any of their purposes including this project.

I hadn't thought about the Fowler tank project, and no mention was made of that, even in the context of their decision to use a wooden pattern for the cylinders (one pattern, because the castings for both sides are identical) rather than polystyrene. When the time comes to start on the Fowler tank, RPSI should be able to offer that and other patterns as well as advice.

In the Q&A session I asked about the absence of coupling links at the front in many of the pictures of NCC moguls. Apparently this was usual on NCC locos, on the principle that they rarely had to couple to anything at that end and, when they did, they could use the other vehicle's coupling. That seems reasonable, but doesn't explain the difference from pretty well all other railways in the British Isles.

    My apologies gentlemen.

Yes the project is still low key and effectively 'unofficial' as No171 is the current priority overhaul/appeal loco. As @MellishR has mentioned there are a lot of parts collected/made already and if you brought them all together right now you would certainly have a very recognisable Mogul!

For those interested, the parts made/collected include:

    All driving wheels (newly retyred)
    The pony truck wheels
    Frames (profiled and drilled)
    Headstock (profiled and drilled)
Stretchers (not sure if they are all completed yet)
    Cylinders (currently being machined)
    Spring hangers
    Motion brackets
    Valve motion brackets
    Some motion
    Hornblocks (currently being machined)
    Main axleboxes (currently being machined)
    Chimney
    Smokebox door
Boiler barrel sections (rolled and awaiting completion)
Inner firebox (awaiting final assembly and drilling for stays)
    Throatplate
    Front tubeplate
    Dome
Tender (new body to be built on existing chassis)

And this is what is will look like when it's all put together:

So you can see that there is a lot that has already been completed, but donations towards moving the project further along will be gratefully received!
Please go to www.steamtrainsireland.com if you wish to make a contribution . Thank you.

The idea's been bubbling under for yonks. There was a fair bit of 'umming and ahhing' over whether to build a second 2-6-4T or recreate the lost mogul. For my part, I'd have been extemely happy with either flavour. BTW, the tank version's mainline swansong was double-headed concrete trains in the early 1970's*. Whatever, the prospect of getting to see the tender version in the land of the living again is mouthwatering. Just hope I live to see it in steam! :)

Who knows? If Boris's notion of a tunnel - under the deepest part of the Irish Sea, awash with dumped WWI nasties - comes to fruition, it may even put in appearance on the Stranraer line .... given that the slight fly in the ointment of the 61/2" gauge difference doesn't seem to have registered with the PM. And yes, on this particular issue, I am most assuredly taking the ..... :Meh:

*yep, the August 1968 date for the end of British mainline steam ignores the six counties.

Well, this RPSI member is hoping for NCC Crimson Lake! I imagine that UTA lined black would also be popular. It could even legitimately wear Brunswick Green.... but don't tell anyone.

Is that on the basis that it's a new build, so RPSI can paint it whatever colour they like? Even on that basis so-called Brunswick Green (which we have often been told is a misnomer for BR green) would seem a very long way down the list.
I hope and expect that it will be as in the picture in post #6. Whether I'll still be around when it's ready to run is uncertain, but if I am I'll be popping over to Ireland for a ride.

Well, being pedantic, they *were* an LMS engine...

But I know what you mean. The moguls are derived from the Fowler 2-6-4T, and are a sort of missing link in LMS locomotive development.

In fact, the NCC Moguls were briefly BR engines. But this is not BR green livery but a special local variant worn by at least one loco (No. 90). It was described as "Brunswick" and looks greener than the BR livery often so described. There's a shot of it on the Colour Rail website, IR270.
