Work on Matthew Murry is progressing at Middleton. Also a rather small industrial diesel "Courage" aka "Sweet Pea" has entered the workshop.

We have had a busy day again on Sir Thomas Royden, both bunkers cleaned up ready for primer and paint and another bout of 'find the missing bits' there here some :-k where!

Good news on Austin 1, another one to look out for.

Bellerophon is still in need of attention... the rods are to have the little ends machined shortly, and two new gudgeon pins are to be turned.

As a former loco Driver at Storefield Quarries Northants ,I can confirm that some AB 14 " were poor steamers , No 6, AB 1497 0-6-0ST and No 20 ,AB 2143,0-4-0ST were pathetic, AB 1047 0-4-0ST, No 11 was good , this loco had been varstly rebuilt at Irchester just after WW2, all three had identical boilers.I was involved with the fiting of no 20 s boiler into no 6 after repair, the only major alteration was the redrilling of the smoke box holes to the smokebox saddle which did,nt line up ,all done by hand drill (phew).A Driver from the near by Glendon quarries came to work with us and said Sordfish, AB 2138 0-6-0ST was just as bad a steamer. I don,t think the problem was with heating serface, no more than with any other industrail loco, more with chimney blastpipe arrangement/dimentions. Cant see what difference which way the engine was facing made any difference to how the loco steamed.

No56 was six weeks between first steam test of the boiler, to loco in traffic, having also fitted steam heat, built a new smokebox, re assembled motion following machining and scaping RH big end and mould, machine and fit piston rod and valve spindle packings.

Looking forward to seeing pics of 62 in steam

Peckett 2000 was 28 days from hydraulic test to reassembled and running up and down the yard under its own power at Barrowhill, that included making and fitting all new pipework. No time was taken off work, though it did coincide with a good run of bank holidays! \:D/

Have you started that s160 yet Consolidation Mike?

we still got loads to do on it both big ends are being re metalled/machined, piston heads cleaned, rings cleaned and replaced, repaint, smokebox needs to be removed from boiler and fitted to UGLY (as it was SAMSONS boiler donated to ugly), the safety valves were stripped down at the weekend and found to require new springs so these will be ordered soon. the injectors were also stripped down and found to reqire a little attention, nothing major so far so probably looking towards the summer for return to steam

I am trying to gather information about Maesteg NCB steam locomotives, particularly Hunslet 0-6-0ST Maureen. My father Jim Blackmore was also the Area Unit Engineer during the 60's, 70's and 80's and it was my sister that christened the loco. I have photographs of the christening featuring my sister and the engine driver at the time. Any further info would be gladly welcomed

Planning and estimating only. Currently preoccupied with other locos based at Rud. Pending the outcome of a decision on fund sources, there will be haevy firebox repairs on 63, new lower inner half sides and about 300 stays. Work is proceeding on Manning Wardle 1762 with the crossheads and slidebars going back together. Then it will be Manning Wardle 2009 on which work stopped in April 2007, because of other priorities. There is machining to be completed on axleboxes and horns, then the frame cleaned and painted prior to re wheeling. When 2009 is operational work will start of the S160, though if we could grow the volunteer base further, we could start sooner.

Not much help to you really, but sister loco "Pamela" is currently on hire to the Lincolnshire Wolds Railway. Whilst there it will receive an overhaul and eventually (hopefully) make a return to the Garw Valley Railway, just over the hill from Maesteg. =D>

Maesteg - now there was a great place. Would love to see the pics. You might be interested in some excellent articles on the system in recent Railway Bylines.

Bad news I am affraid about the engine Maureen. After Maesteg HE 2890 ended up at the South Devon Railway where it was renamed Barbara. It worked services there for a number of years including over BR into Totnes station. Unfortunately it was purchased by members of the Mid Hants Railway a few years ago and converted into a 0-6-0 tender engine named Douglas. Not only did this conversion ignore the history of this locomotive but I understand it didn't have much traction - what did they expect when they took the saddle tank off? They now want to convert it into some Southern engine...what is wrong with an ex WD/NCB austerity?

Ironically Maesteg shedmate Linda has also suffered a similar fate being converted to Thomas. But as the engines aren't in an ABC I don't suppose they count ...

Hopefully Pamela can fly the flag for some of the hardest working engines in the UK and lose the fake BR black livery soon.

Sorry not good news but hope it helps!

Things like the Donald/Douglas conversion are exactly the reason why ARISE was formed!

    See this thread: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=16570

First meeting of the group will hopefully be taking place at the Tanfield's Coal Train day in just over a week's time \:D/

pollishing side rods or in the bar

I will take that as an unsubtle hint then, the tank has been removed from 1563 to allow access to the boiler for an inspection of what bit's we can keep [-o< [-o< . One of the springs has been rebuilt with the second waiting to be reassembled, with the other two next in line, the hangers have been dug out of long term hibernation as some new nuts are needed. Material for the new piston rods are on hand as soon as the engine they are currently fitted to has no further need for them.......... Some new plate has also been ordered for the cab sides.
