Damaged frames, boiler problems. Who knows. Any number of reasons why one day it may make more sense to overhaul Juno instead.

Or perhaps one day in the very distant future, an extended line meaning an operational requirement for more locos.

A good point, though I would have thought the better option would be to use Juno for source of spare parts, specifically trading it's own parts for the other's (the operable Austerities) damaged ones seeing as it's just a static exhibit.

I thought the point about Juno was that a high degree of originality made it a good candidate for museum preservation - not everything has to be seen only in terms of an operational future. Certainly I’d prefer to see a loco in secure long-term accommodation than a “restoration candidate” gradually deteriorating outside.

Juno has had very little use from new, it is still fitted with its original boiler tubes! Possibly the only Loco in as built condition. Break it up for spares!!!! I think not.

Oh that's pretty much how I figured they viewed it as, and certainly I have no issue with it remaining a static exhibit, I was merely speculating on the grounds another made of supposedly Juno being in strategic reserve should something befall the other Austerities.

Glad it is secure undercover somewhere, and that it's maintained in such a way to preserve it's originality.

It was donated to the IOWSR. They had no operational need for it, and the NRM expressed an interest in placing it on display. The NRM gets an interesting exhibit, and the IOWSR get secure undercover accommodation for it. Win win.

That’s not to say things might not change one day. The NRM may decide they no longer want it there, or the IOWSR may decide they need another operational Austerity. We will have to wait and see.

Not sure that a certain railway in Kent will want to part with that certain Terrier.

The suggestion was only that it should return to the IOW as a visitor, not permanently.

Not that the IOWSR would say no if it ever did come up for sale.

it would depend on what deal could be done, for instance, if the low loader taking 2678 across the Solent, could pick up 41313, or 41298 (hope i got that one's number right) to make a reciprocal visit, to Sussex, for the same time, say a months loan, to enable both lines to make most use of their guests, i would think both lines might be interested.

Indeed it was only a suggestion of visiting for a time, and neat thought but I very much doubt it will ever come up for sale, being not only owned by the Terrier Trust but has just as much if not arguably more association with the KESR throughout it's existence then with then it's time on the Isle of Wight.

Personally I think that would be a marvelous idea myself, give plenty of time for folks to enjoy 2678 back on the island operating there for a bit, as well as allow the folks in Kent to be treated to the charm of the Ivatt Tank too. Course only slight problem I would foresee is I don't know if either of the Ivatt tank engines still retain their vacuum brakes, they could be just purely air brake operated now, unless of course the KESR happen to have some air brake stock available but I very much doubt it.

41313 & 41298 are both capable of working vacuum braked stock, it apparently takes approx a hour to perform the conversion.

Just like people to bring up WIBN ideas at present! Are they going to pay?
