Discussion in 'National Railway Museum' started by 73129, May 8, 2008.

Is that because its been over shadowed by other recent events ala tornado 4472 and such

And all mainline connected I believe, so it can bring its own stock if necessary. I rest my case.

The problem is that it doesnt have its own stock, the carriages would have to be hired in on top of the Scotsman's fee; and even if a line did decide to go to that expense, its likely that the NRM wouldnt allow it anyway as none of the railways drivers would likely have any experience of air brakes.

So yes, while Scotsman could visit any mainline connected railway (a limit i think most people could live with), the lack of vacuum brakes will make it largely impractical.

  3. You would be surprised most drivers have knowledge of air brakes

Indeed, I would be surprised! In theory I've got the knowledge but I've never driven an air braked train in 40 years of driving. I don't think I'm unique in that. Unless you're on the Isle of Wight, I don't think anywhere else uses train air with a steam loco on the standard gauge.

East Lancs, Mid Norfolk both have air braked rakes of stock and im sure a couple of others could form such a rake if the need was there.

Quite a few of the Lancs drivers were required to train on airbrakes because of the Metrolink contract.

SVR drivers have driven AB trains including 6024 on the royal train and 60009 on the Northern Belle visits.

The state of play on Friday evening, just before closing time. Biggest visible change since my last visit is the valve gear being assembled, also the pony truck is in place.

No sign of the double chimney i hate so much, or the smoke deflectors. I note the chimney's at £1,000 on the sponsorship list. If I sponsored it, could I choose a single one?

Thanks to the NRM guys who let me sit in Mallard's driving seat while we had a chat. You can't do that when the place is full.

Well chimneys are like gins, I always say "make mine a double". Appears to be no way of finding out on the website? No email contact address etc.

Perhaps it's a cunning ploy - they'll sell it twice over and fit a double?

Mind you my cheque-book's staying firmly shut unless the sucky brakes go back on.

It does seem quiet funny that this loco has financialy crippled all its past owners and then as soon as it bought for the Nation we end up in economic problems ourselves!!!!! just a thought thats all.

I have said this before the double chimney is there behind the loco on a pallet. The wheels are under for the trial boiler fitting as was said in the interview with Jim Rees in steam railway. Also said in the article that the vaccum brakes will go back on when the money is available which i damm well hope is part of this 250k.

Thanks for that Gresleyman. So that's def a new double chimney sat there - not the old one?

I agree, the vac brakes ought to be on the shopping list for the £250k - it's a pity that the Scotsman team aren't a bit more forthcoming on here to clarify some of the points being raised, in the way that the A1 team do.

do we ever learn , why has the costs gone up so much, just how bad was this engine, I dont agree with waterman, but he was spot on with this one, its a wreck!! it was run into the ground and how much extra has yorks insistance on originality been to blame how much did tornados boiler cost? compare that to how much it will cost to repair either of the boilers that 4472 ran with? or even the cost of a steel firebox if that was all it was needed, after all, who cares about the innerds , its not the same engine that was built by the LNER, its had numerious modifications boilers swopped ,all joe public will care about is that its painted apple green and has 4472 on the cab side

If she was to have a single chimney put back on her would there be a need to put those awful looking smoke deflectors back on her. I’ve seen photos of 4472 running in BR days with out smoke deflectors so why can’t 4472 run with out smoke deflectors now. If a driver could see what was going on in front of him back in the old days. Why can’t he see what is going on now when driving 4472.

  18. because for one its common sense to have a clear view of the road so it is a necessary evil I'm afraid

With the single chimney i believe there is less of a problem with drifting smoke. However it would seem they wish to retain the current smokebox arrangment as the loco steams better - so deflectors stay...
