B.R. Brake Vans, Interior Liveries

Folks :

As the title suggests we at the Mid-Hants are more than halfway through the restoration of these vans, however we need advice as the exterior/interior liveries.

The first one is dated 1952 , one of the first B.R. ones to the LNER design . It is intended to run this on Engineers trains in green livery?. If so what is the paint code and what would the colour of the interior be?, and would it be two tone or simply one colour?.

The other one is 1958 sample and we all have agreed that this one,s exterior will be bauxite, no problem there though would the lookout duckets be black or bauxite?
The interior of this one was going to be two tone with cream above and dark brown below as the Southern Railway did though this has now been suggested to me that this is wrong.

Can anyone help please?

Whenever I looked inside one in service (at Willesden Brent, to check equipment to avoid delay when a guard turned up) they were too dark with coal smoke and grease to discern any colour!!
Mind you that was in the 80's and 90's

Unfortunately I cant help cct man, but as he's started a thread on Brake Van interiors, does anyone know about the colours of SR vans ?
I own SR 55170, a 25 tonne Pill Box, and was wondering what the interior colour would be when the outside was in SR Chocolate Brown / Venetian Red??

When I got the van, the inside was crimson on the lower section, and white on the upper.

Any advice appreciated.

A couple of pictures of vans, the brown and cream is on a standard 20 ton van at the East Anglian railway museum and the dark red and cream on an LNER/BR PWay brake at Magnapps farm, both colours I believe are correct for the BR steam period, depending on region?, the BR 20 ton vans getting grey (Dove?) in the 80`s, hope this helps,

From the NYMR PWay wagon restoration team.
British Railways Wagons by Don Rowland David & Charles (page 100) has a reasonable picture of the interior of a 1951 built 20T guards van. This would appear to show all the interior as being cream , though British Railways Brake Vans & Ballast Ploughs by Eric Gent HMRS would suggest that these vans were chocolate brown below the waist and half way up the ducket. Our restorations of vans of this period have revealed chocolate below the waist and cream above, with the number above the ducket on the inside in black.
We only have photographic and historical records of BR built 20 T vans having the exterior of the ducket painted either grey ( unfitted) or bauxite (fitted) . We have never seen any evidence of exterior of duckets painted black.

 

Having had the same problem a few years ago with the one we were working on at Bewdley, as far as I know, both the Chocolate and Cream, and the Maroon and Cream are correct.

 

Got two photos of a recently released to traffic brakevan at the GCR. Cream (more white to be honest) and brown on the inside and bauxite on the outside.

 

As far as i am aware, the Great Western policy for the Toads was Chocolate and Cream.

 

I think there's some debate about that, it's possible they were off white & bauxite as well.

This is the spec for British Railways freight vehicles. BR BGs inside were BS 446 Red Oxide for any surface likely to to be scuffed such as inside of doors, cages and lower walls up to 3'6" and cream above with a white ceiling.
