An update for you from the clan project web site. We have 3 separate web sites, one of them is my test site to check out new functions. The web sites were migrated onto a new platform last Friday. Unfortunately, it looks as if the hosting company migrated all 3 sites onto one site. So we will have to start again next week!

Meanwhile, I'm hoping that the bogie axle cannon boxes have been cast so we will chase them for photos

This weeks update for you. The 2 cannon axle boxes for the bogie have now been cast at South Lincs Foundry. They are currently in post casting heat treatment before going into final inspection. The picture is after casting with the runner bars and feeder system in place.

Great to see the progress Ian, together with the almost complete funding for the bogie, the frames are getting closer to being mobile.:):)

Latest news is progress on the bogie cannon boxes. It is very interesting to see how often certain suppliers, like this foundry, crop up on different project websites. Locomotive preservation must be becoming a bit of a specialist market with those who can do it getting decent business.

Suspect there is a bit of ' asking round 'within the heritage movement and therefore when one asks 'where can i get this done' the same names crop up.

I am sure that will be true Sean, and that is as it should be. Preservation and new build projects are costing a lot of money from members/public pockets so it would be reckless to not use tried and tested suppliers when possible. Which reminds me, I wonder if we have overcome the difficulty about the square section coil springs yet? I can't imagine there is much of a queue of projects wanting those at the moment, but a few years hence, you never know.

If you know of a supplier of Square Section Coil springs I would like to know please.
We have some to replace due to breakage.

Thought I had found one on Wheeler Dealers last week but NO

You have more chance of getting rocking horse droppings. Replacement round section springs have been made to use on a number of loco classes.
These include the side control springs on the bogie of the Patriot and the pony trucks of the the Stanier 8Fs, Ivatt 2s, Standard 2s, Standard 4 tanks, the leading pony trucks of the Ivatt and Standard 2 tanks and the Standard 3 tank new build. All use the same springs, of course. One of the spring companies was given the details of the original spring and designed the alternative. The new springs have been proven on, at least two locos. I believe that the 72010 management know of this development. Whether they have given details of their springs to said company, I do not know.

45407 also has nested coil springs for the bogie side control, based on an image which the owner posted on his site, but I imagine the Clan group know this.

That's very good to know thank you. I know there was the suggestion of the double spring but I don't know which one they have gone for. The 'excellent' website has not divulged that information yet!! I suspect the quest may not be over yet.

Ours will be a totally different size ours are shorter.
They are part of the nested spirngs in a bogie off a 40T WELTROL wagon.
I do not have the drawing to hand to confirm sizes.

The problem is to get a rectangular section spring you need to start off with a trapezoidal section and no one rolls this any more, to my knowledge. Spring makers can usually offer a practical alternative solution, though, if you are willing to compromise.

That's the thing about these projects sometimes you can compromise and sometimes you can't. Thankfully that is not my decision. The alternative is to re-design the component to achieve the desired result. One thing is for sure, it won't stop us!!

Having checked my emails, 72010's chief engineer made enquiries with a spring company about alternative springs in 2018.
