Manchester ship canal locomotives

    Does anyone know of any bookd relating to the MSC locomotives and railways? and how many of the short tank types are left i know of gothumburg and hamburg but are there any more ?

    The was a book published entitled 'The Railways of the Manchester Ship Canal' by Don Thorpe. Published in 1984. Mine of information and photographs - an absolute gem of a book, in my opinion. ISBN: 0860932885. You should get a copy for around £20 from a bookseller.

    There are two short tanks - 31 & 32, two long tanks - 67 & 70 and one Jazzer - 14 still extant.

    Don't forget the ex-MSC Hudswell diesels 4002 (East Lancs) and a.n.other at Peak Rail!

    Jazzers were the Hunslet version of the Hudswell, Clarke short tanks and actually pre-dated them, the first Jazzer being built in 1898, four years earlier than the first Short Tank (officially the 'Canal' class). The two were very identical in dimensions, the biggest difference being that the Jazzer had a 160 psi boiler against the Hudswell's 140 psi. The Hudswell's were somewhat heavier, as well.

    Lady A has a slightly different cab profile to the preserved Hudswell Clarke locos as well.

    The Jazzers had them, as did the long tanks. They were all on the front axles, not the rear ones. Question for the technically minded. These locos had cartazzi front axleboxes as Jud says but they also had wide centre flangeless driving wheels with a flat profile. Given that situation, how can the cartazzi have ever worked? As far as the track/wheel interface is concerned, they are just a long wheelbase 0-4-0.

    With out 4001 4002 would have never run again though many parts were used of 4001 to make 4002 a runner.

    Excuse a Southerner's ignorance, but is anything left of the MSC railway? I remember a great brake van tour in June 1974 (think it was Manchester University Railway Society) when we got as far as Irlam and maybe Cadishead or Partington - ringing bells, but I've lost my notes. Oh, happy days before elfansafety took over.

    theres all the tracks left around trafford park, use google maps and have a look.

    i think there is also one depot left with 3 locos, one i know is an ex ews 08 shunter.

    i find that hard to see seen as most of the road going sections have had what were level crossings tarmac put over the rails so wont be getting used any time soon.

    i havent seen a loco on it for ages and last i read the last container depot that the msc used is to either close or use road transport now
     
  15. I paid a brief visit to trafford park yesterday evening and there is a sign warning of slow moving trains on the approach so this indicates some activity still is there

    Container trains run from the junction next to Old Trafford along the Trafford Park Railway to a container terminal next to the Trafford Center. I think it runs up to 3 times a day using an 08.
