But since the general public would never have noticed let alone known that there were various sizes, did it really matter that much except to rivet counters?

No it didn't matter except that for a while some folk were saying on here that they were 'correct' when they were not. All it needed was someone to share what was going on and the issue would die an immediate death. In one post JS has done just that.

Funny idea of correct - the numerals may be the right size now but they are the wrong ones for the engine. It is after all 45699 in reality.:) But yes it does look good!

In 1965 35022 twice did Waterloo to Yeovil Jct 123 miles without stopping for water. I was on the first with Spot King driving and Dave Wilson firing. 90 mph max from memory and easy running uphill

Thanks Don - I had a vague memory of reading about those trips, but couldn’t remember the details - what was the occasion?

!n 1965 the Exeter route switched from steam to diesel so the Exeter Flyers were 'swansong' trips that also covered the branch lines off the LSWR main line between Yeovil and Exeter.

I was on the trip on 28/2/65 with MN22. It should have been non stop to Yeovil but Woking signallers had other ideas where we were stopped for over three minutes. We were also slowed at Basingstoke and there was a tsr before Gillingham. But we hit 88 through Andover and touched 90 at Sherborne, running to Yeovil in a little under 133 minutes. The train divided with options that covered Lyme Regis, Seaton, Sidmouth and Exmouth but you couldn't do all of those in one hit. Coming home we took unscheduled water at Salisbury and had bad checks beyond Basingstoke so it wasn't even time to London and going down we passed Salisbury in 91 min because of the delays.

As we are not going to see any new videos of Clan Line for the foreseeable future, I thought it might be worth resurrecting a compilation video I produced a few years ago:

I do like the late thirties streamline moderne/art deco type look of the early MNs.
(Yes, I know it was early forties, but the styling has a strong prewar flavour).

    Thank You very much.
The numbers corresponds very well with the later Britania all out(two firemen) Ais Gill visit and the BR is 4 tons more

As I would normally be making plans around this time of year to film the first Surrey Hills of the year it got me thinking just how many time over the years had I filmed Clan Line. The answer is I have produced 29 videos featuring 24 different locations and at many of those multiple different angles filmed over the years! So below is a compilation of the best of those videos filmed in sequence along the route...

Fingered crossed that the March one runs but the way things are going I have my doubts. More seriously for the engine there are a year’s steaming fees lost now, so anyone who wants to support the most consistent main line loco, consider joining the Society or just part with a bit of hard earned cash to help fill the gap.

Sad to see that Belmond isn't advertising anything for March - steam or otherwise - so it looks as though it'll be a delayed start for 2021, as with other operators.

I thought that might be the case although when I looked the March one was fully booked so that may be the reason it’s not showing but I can’t see the government lifting travel restrictions by then.

After reading one of my Somerset & Dorset books (yet again) I note that Clan Line was the last steam loco to be serviced at Templecombe shed on the final day of the Somerset & Dorset on 6th March, 1966..
The loco had arrived on a charter from Waterloo via Alresford. The charter then proceeded to Highbridge behind 41283 & 41249, on to Mangotsfield North Jn behind 34013, to Bath Green Park behind D7014 (34013 at the rear) and then over the Somerset & Dorset to Templecombe double-headed with 34013 and 34057. Clan Line then returned the charter to Waterloo via Basingstoke. <BJ>

Merchant 11 also visited Templecombe on a similar tour on 1st January 1966 except that a 9F took us to Warmley where it failed with a collapsed brick arch before we were rescued by one of the double headed 8Fs that eventually took us down to Templecombe from Green Park to pick up MN11 again. All in a day as well.

As for MN28 it looks as though the next time it carries passengers will be on 19th May with a Belmond Bath trip.
