On Monday, 43185 and 43172 were both working two different trains just 15 minutes apart from each other, and I still had a couple of days left on an all line rover. I didn't have anything better to do so set out for Goring and Streatley so I could get a shot of each, similar to that of 43002 on page 1. And here they are...

Those pictures are not too shabby. Thank you for posting. Those power cars are a big success, still 'doing the business' after all these years.

My morning commute a couple of weeks ago resulted in seeing Kenneth Grange and Great Western side-by-side at Reading. 43002-SirKennethGrange04_20170426_Reading_43185 (Large).jpg

I posted this in Photography yesterday, but as this thread has been revived I thought I may as well post it here.
    A bit of nostalgia.

Not only is it good to see the HSTs when they they had just entered service but also good to see photographs of the Western Region before the horrendous overhead catenary system appeared.

Thankfully the scenic Chippenham to Bristol Temple Meads section has yet to be converted / ruined. <BJ>

I’m thinking the same, I have a feeling in about 20 years one might be de accesioned, but there’s a cog going around in my head thinking didn’t the Railway Heritage Committee designate a complete HST Set to be saved?

Yes I thought a complete HST set had been designated to be saved. Maybe things have changed now. A complete HST set would take up a lot of room at the NRM, and for what benefit? Maybe a single coach could be displayed with one or both power cars.

It will still be possible to see complete working HST sets either the 125 group and LSL.

I would be dismayed if the NRM preserved a whole HST set... Given the number of recent deaccessions, the sizes of the buildings they have available, and the number of potential future vehicles that may tell the story of railway history of the 21st (and 22nd!) centuries, then to house a 2+8 HST set would be compromising to the collection as a whole.

Don't get me wrong, the HST is in my opinion possibly the most iconic diesel train in the world, and it would be a crime to not have one in the museum collection. However it is a museum, and not a heritage railway or railtour operator, therefore I'm convinced the best way to display an HST is with a powercar and single coach.

    No doubt others will disagree!

I’ve mentioned above I find it strange that there’s 2 (3 if you count 41001) power cars in the National Collection, it’s a little stranger when looking at how professional the HST group were with their custodianship of 41001.
I find the NRM’s modern traction policy rather baffling, then again a few years ago D200/40122 was considered ‘Not important enough’ until Rail Enthusiast magazine did a fair bit to raise its profile.
I just wonder if Steam Railway Mag will get as wound up as they have in the past regarding 563 North Staffs No2 when one power car gets deaccesioned in the future?

Agree that 3 power cars seems a bit excessive. Prototype, first production, and the fastest diesel locomotive in the world.

Does it really add anything to have 43002? Yes it’s the first production car, but it’s basically the same as 43102. 43102 could serve a dual purpose as both an example of the type and as the record breaker.

That's annoying. If it was on the 14:34 to Nottingham, I could catch it before starting work but the 15:34 is too late for me. Hopefully I'll have better luck afore long.
