    Thanks for posting the photos of the very handsome NBR Reid Atlantics.

    I did wonder about the ugly pipe fitted on the side of No 9903 Cock o' the North in Photos 16-18. According to RCTS, it was a Worthington feed-water heater and pump, added in 1926 and retained until withdrawal in 1937.

    The NBR Class G locomotives were introduced by Drummond. The first two were purchased in 1882 from Neilson & Co, to their standard design. Originally purchased for dock shunting, they proved to be eminently suitable for light shunting in both docks and the Scottish lowlands. A total of 38 were built, with the last being built in 1899.
    Although the term "pug" was used for different engines on different railways (eg. the Caledonian men called all tank engines "pugs"), the NBR reserved the name "pug" for these engines. Typically, the Y9s were driven by youngest drivers and firemen. However, senior men would also be posted on the Y9s for health reasons, or as a form of demotion for misdemeanors on the mainline. Apparently more than one driver known for speeding, ended up spending a number of years shunting Y9s at Leith Docks!
    Rebuilding with new boilers started in 1913. Nos. 308, 343, and 344 were withdrawn in 1921/2, and had not been rebuilt. Five had not been rebuilt by Grouping: No. 1103 was withdrawn in 1923, whilst the other four were rebuilt in 1923. At Grouping, the LNER classified them as Class Y9.
    No. 10087 was withdrawn in 1938, and the remaining 33 survived until 1953. These were withdrawn between 1953 and 1962.
    The Y9s were renumbered many times during their life with the NBR, and received preliminary numbers from the LNER, before being given 9000 series numbers in 1924.
    The new boilers fitted between 1913 and 1923 had similar dimensions to the originals, but the safety valves were located under the dome. The only other major change with these rebuilds, was the replacement of the leading coupling rod ends with a solid-bushed pattern.
    The Y9s were fitted with dumb buffers. Originally these were solid wood, but were eventually replaced with a metal framework covered with plate. However, the wooden buffer beams were kept.
    Due to the small size of the coal bunkers (18cwt), various 4-wheeled wooden coal carriers were used as tenders. When used, these were connected with a conventional three-link coupling. For main-line running, two safety chains were added. In 1939, No. 9308 had its rear buffers removed, and a central drawgear added, so making the tender a permanent fixture. In 1944, Nos. 9011, 9063, 9144, 9146, and 10083, also had central drawgear fitted.

    The NBR J Class (LNER Classes D29 & D30), commonly known as the Scott class, were a class of 4-4-0 steam tender locomotives designed by William P. Reid for the North British Railway. They passed to the London and North Eastern Railway at the grouping in 1923. Forty-three were built, of which thirty-five (ten D29s and twenty-five D30s) survived into British Railways ownership in 1948.
    The Original J Class locomotives were based on the NBR K Class mixed traffic 4-4-0s. The J Class had 6' 6" driving wheels for express passenger work and a large tender which carried sufficient water to allow passenger trains to run non-stop between Edinburgh and Carlisle. These locomotives were named after characters in the novels of Sir Walter Scott and naturally became known as "Scotts". Some of the names were later re-used on LNER Peppercorn Class A1 locomotives.
    Six locomotives were built in 1909 by the North British Locomotive Company and a further ten were built in 1911 by the North British Railway at its Cowlairs railway works, followed by two further identical locomotives with superheaters. The NBR always referred to these locomotives as J Class, but the LNER classified the initial 16 locomotives D29

    I have added a collection of photos of William Reid N.B.R. K Class (LNER D32) 4-4-0
    Twelve engines ordered in 1905 and built at Cowlairs in 1906–07. The LNER began to fit superheated boilers in 1923 and classified the superheated locomotives D32/2. The non-superheated locomotives were classified D32/1
    The locomotives passed to the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) in 1923 and, some of them, to British Railways (BR) in 1948. BR numbers were:

    The LNER divided the NBR K class into four classes, as below. It was common practice for the North British Railway to assign similar engines to the same class group, whereas the LNER system allowed only identical engines to bear the same class designation.

    The NBR A Class (London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) Classes N14 and N15 were the standard 0-6-2 tank locomotives designed by William P. Reid for freight duties on the North British Railway. The LNER regarded the original locomotives as two separate classes (N14 & N15). The final batch of locomotives was on order at the time of the grouping in 1923
    N14 Class
    The original six locomotive introduced in 1909 and had inside cylinders and piston valves operated by Stephenson valve gear, and weighed 62 LT 10 cwt (63.5 t). They were built by the North British Locomotive Company and numbered 858-863. They were withdrawn 1947-1954.
    N15/1 Class
    Fifty three similar locomotives were built by the North British Locomotive Company between June 1910 March 1917 with longer cabs but shorter bunkers. They were fitted with Steam brakes and used on Freight duties. A further batch of ten locomotives was built by North British Locomotive Company in February and March 1920. A third batch of ten was on order from Robert Stephenson and Company when the North British Railway became a constituent of the LNER. They were delivered between January and March 1923. They weighed 60 LT 18 cwt (61.9 t) and were numbered to fill gaps in the sequence between 20 and 926. Two of these locomotives were later fitted with Westinghouse brakes in 1929 and were re-classified N15/2. The remainder were withdrawn between 1957 and 1962.
    N15/2 Class
    Six N15/1 locomotives were built by the North British Locomotive Company with Westinghouse brakes in 1910. They were used to bank passenger trains up the 1 in 42 Cowlairs incline leading from Glasgow Queen Street railway station. Prior to 1910 trains had been rope hauled by a stationary engine. A further two N15/1 were converted to N15/2 in 1929. They weighed 62 LT 1 cwt (63.0 t) and were numbered to fill gaps in the sequence between 7 and 282 and were withdrawn between 1957 and 1962.

    I have a new collection of photos featuring the NBR F Class (LNER Class J88) was a class of 0-6-0 tank locomotives, designed by William P. Reid on the North British Railway. They were used for dockyard shunting duties
    When the North British railway required more dock shunting tank locomotives in 1904, rather than order further copies of the railway's standard G class (LNER class Y9) 0-4-0ST , William P. Reid introduced a completely new 0-6-0T locomotive design
    They were used on docks and harbours on both the east and west coasts of Scotland. They were usually allocated to St. Margaret's (Edinburgh), Eastfield (Glasgow), Thornton, Kipps, Polmont, Stirling and Haymarket (Edinburgh) locomotive depots.
    At the grouping in 1923, they all passed to the London and North Eastern Railway, who classified them as class J88. They were all still in service at Nationalisation in 1948. BR added 60000 to their LNER 1946 number
    One locomotive, No. 68341, was withdrawn in 1954 after falling into Kirkcaldy harbour, but later the class were gradually displaced by diesel shunters during the 1950s, with the last withdrawn in December 1962. All members of the class were scrapped
