Does anybody know what locos will be running at the NNR this week? I'm in East Anglia at the moment and am particularly keen to see the Y14 or B12 if they are in use :)

Facebook page ‘Friends of the North Norfolk Railway’ is usually helpful for finding out this info now the website isn’t updated as often as pre-Covid days.

    Great work as usual.
I hate to be 'that guy', but are you guys aware of the spelling mistake on the data panel on E21224? (Duel should be Dual)

Normally corrections irritate me but you have saved me future grief! Thankyou for pointing it out, you are the first to spot it. That spelling is my mistake, and the other end is to be lettered tomorrow so I appreciate being corrected now so I can do the other end correctly... I shall also correct this end as E21224 is intended for mainline use, and I would hate for it to fail it's acceptence over an incorrect letter!

Why 25 MPH for a vehicle that you have said is intended for mainline use?

Presumably because it's only going along the mainline to Cromer and there is no need to go faster than 25mph along that section?

Our vehicles are registered to run on Network Rail under a derogation, which has its own set of conditions.

This works both ways. On the one hand we are exempt from certain requirements, such as painting the gutters orange for overhead wires, and we can run oil axleboxes without the usual hassle you would get on the mainline. However on the flip side, we are heavily route restricted (just the 4 miles from Sheringham to Cromer) and the coaches are not allowed to exceed their preservation speed, hence the 25mph lettering.

So the coaches are mainline registered in an admin sense, but you won't be seeing them at Liverpool Street! I believe the arrangement has many parallels with the NYMR Whitby-Grosmont registered coaching stock.

The NNR runs to Cromer under the NYMR's safety case so the NYMR is technically running the trains.

I did wonder about the 25mph marking. I can't say I have ever looked, but for railways that have no mainline running, is the convention in such cases to put 25mph as the heritage railway maximum; or put 95mph (or whatever) to recreate what the data panel would have said in pre-preservation days? (In the same way some steam locos painted in 1960s garb have "overhead live wire" flashes even though they will never be used anywhere near such things). Or does practice vary?

Kind of related to the above: if you have carriages for use on the mainline, is the data panel a requirement - and if so, presumably the indicated speed has to be the maximum permitted under current operational conditions, not a "heritage" value for appearance only?

Like you it’s something I’ve not really thought about. I’m fairly certain NYMR non-Whitby stock is marked with their original restriction but I can’t say about the Whitby stock. I’m guessing that they are plated for 45mph running to Battersby. This brings me to M59137”s post. The line to Cromer is more than 25mph and I’m pretty certain NNR crewed trains can run faster than that. I don’t have access to all the NNR info in the NYMR safety case, though.

NNR practice is pre-preservation recreations for "domestic" stock, and modified ones that meet current standards for "Cromer" stock.

Yes to both questions (for the NNR at least). This is why, jokes aside, it was important for me to correct the spelling mistake further up the thread, as that data panel is a part which will be inspected by the "relevent people" before that coach is granted permission to run to Cromer.

The locos can run faster, but the carriages are limited to 25mph, which obviously has the effect of setting the maximum speed of the train. That's why we "plate" them at 25.
