How many water stops would it need between Manchester and Bournemouth? :)

I worry for the future of the S&D trust. Moving away from Somerset to an isolated site brings in the death nells of the organisation. Its like having London tube stock on the IOW.

The old S and D and the Mid Hants companies have a great deal in common. The LSWR connection is very strong. Together we will be able to tell the stories of the two lines more powerfully than separately.

Your comparison seems strange to me, after all LUL 38 stock worked longer on the IOW than in London didnt it?

Washford is an isolated site & the S&DRT had been considering a move anyway, many of the membership live closer to the MHR Than Washford

No it didn’t. Almost 50 years in London, and only 30 on the IOW.

Although I’m not sure what point Daddsie71b was trying to make.

Arguably, a lot more than the old S&D and the GWR.

I don't think that is quite right. These ex-LT units arrived on the island in late '65 and entered service in '66. Thats 55 years ago by my calculation.

That was the previous units. The ones that have just been withdrawn replaced them in the late 80s.

The LT standard stock arrived in 1967 and lasted until 1990. It was then replaced by the 1938 stock that 21B mentioned, which lasted 30 years on the island and is now being replaced.

A strange comment. I worry about the future of the S&D Trust were it to have remained on the WSR.

Whilst clearly both the WSR and the MHR are each primarily about that particular railway, the associations that the S&D will be able to maintain on the MHR are far stronger than on the WSR that we know seems all about GW locos and GW ethos. Nothing wrong with that except that the 'fit' with the LSWR/Southern is a far stronger one.

Sorry, I did not realise that the original tube trains had been replaced. A bit like GW locos, they all look the same to me:).

(Apologies for thread drift) For some years, trains on the Bakerloo Line consisted of 1938 stock with one coach of the earlier stock, which was noticeably different in appearance, even for someone with no expertise or particular interest in tube stock.

In my defence, Guv, I don't ever recall travelling on the Bakerloo Line in those days - I may have noticed the difference if I had seen such trains.

Kilmersdon in the yard at Ropley now, and mentions of a certain fairground... why do I hear an epic quantity of wibbling and gnashing of teeth from the vicinity of Honiton?!

I've posted a similar comment on the Mid Hants chat, but it seems it would be appropriate here... Is there really a need for teasing like this?

Guys, I think I should have put a winking imogee after my post. I would have thought that you would have picked up on my irony suggesting that tube stock on the Island of White (as a Weymouth guard used to announce) was possible, incredulous even, but it happened. Twice.
In future I will keep my humour to myself..................
