Why is that? Are the locos being maintained to a higher standard than the coaches to allow them to run at a higher speed? If so, what's the point if the coaches they're pulling can't go faster?

Remembering the Swanage DMUs, I'm guessing the lack of central locking would be one issue.

I’m sure someone can explain this better than myself, but for example isn’t some stock restricted due to what bogies it has? For example stock with Commonwealth bogies is passed for higher speed running than the original Mk1 bogie? Not that it would make much difference between Sheringham and Cromer anyway.

Both locos used (Standard 4 76084 & Class 20 20227) are "fully mainline registered" and can therefore go beyond Cromer and operate at the higher speeds applicable to the traction type.

Remember that although 90% of the mainline work of these locos recently has been Cromer services, they are not maintained exclusively for this work per se. There have been instances where both 76084 and 20227 have taken off beyond Cromer to fulfil other mainline duties elsewhere.

The coaches are registered for Sheringham-Cromer only and have their own ticket which limits them to the 25mph.

Oil bearings rather than roller bearings on BR1 bogies. Though 60007's support coach was fitted with BR1 bogies with roller bearings until its recent overhaul.

I think customers on the Cromer dining trains would rather enjoy the sea view and beautiful landscape at a sedate pace rather than be sped along the 4 mile stretch to Sheringham at 60mph

Yeah I don't disagree with that! I was just curious as to why this discrepancy in max speeds - if locos are not being given a mainline ticket solely for Cromer runs that makes sense (I was assuming it was like the NYMR where locos were only ticketed to run Whitby trains). Speaking of which, I've also got it in my head that NYMR trains are allowed to run at 35mph to Whitby - is that right? And if so, what extra do the NYMR do to their Mk1s to allow them to run at 35 that the NNR haven't done?

I’m guessing if the NNR ever extends its dining services to Norwich the carriages would need to be upgraded? I’ve seen Norwich mentioned in Joint Line but I assume it’s a long term goal.

Line speed Grosmont-Whitby is 30 mph. However, to run at more than 25 mph, the doors have to have an attendant.

The line between Cromer and Sheringham has a differential speed restriction of 30/55. So while the modern BMUs can run at 55mph, loco hauled stock can only travel at 30mph. Given the extra regulatory work required to up the speed of the coaches beyond 25mph, there isn’t much benefit in doing it for only a 5mph increase.

What are the NNR passenger numbers like after reopening? Is the railway getting the numbers they planned for now that the weather is improving?

I very much wanted to travel up and visit for the whole day and finally ride again behind some steam, but as I would be on my own, the £160 cost was just too steep. I see there is now a cheaper railcar service from Monday onwards so may go for that instead and visit one day this week. Its a shame Weybourne is not open as its such a beautiful station to just sit and watch the world go by. Hopefully soon.....

I think numbers could be considered "steady" (please note this is completely unofficial and personal viewpoint). I have watched quite a few lightly loaded trains go by suggesting that things are taking a little while to gain momentum... Having said that certain trains on certain days have also been full so it is certainly not all doom and gloom. Also worth taking into consideration that early May, midweek and during term time, is not traditionally a busy time anyways.

As a railcar driver and NNR diesel supporter I very much hope you do come for a spin! The addition of the extra railcar trips (second train) is one step closer to a normal timetable and no doubt ridership will be being monitored - we would welcome your support by booking on the service!

Pretty sure the re-opening of Weybourne is on the agenda for the near future. It’s my favourite spot on the line as well.

Agreed. This will sound silly but unless you’ve ever been, even the toilets at Weybourne are well worth a visit. (Well certainly the Gents, I’ve no idea what the ladies are like)

The gents loos are indeed wonderfully restored.

Just can’t stay in there too long admiring them as it can get a bit uncomfortable if there’s someone else in there

I did consider taking a photo in there a few years ago for use in the picture puzzle quiz on here until I realised how dodgy it would look!
