Absolutely. There is no consensus on livery, just opinion, and even that is fed in some cases by personal preferences that bear no relation to what may or may not have been carried in the past. Buy your own locomotive and then you can paint it whatever colour you like.

As for the S&D Trust it has clearly decided that Washford is not a home that it can, or wants to remain at with its entire collection. The MHR option provides welcome security.

One of the strengths of the MHR is a fairly consistent 1950s "feel". Much as I prefer the older period of railways (period, not specifically liveries), I think painting some of their locos in older liveries would jar with their existing carriages and station presentation. Ask the question about SR livery for the T9 when they also have plenty of SR carriages and maybe have some of their stations painted in SR colours ...

I've heard 120 is currently being repainted in 1960s BR blue with full yellow smokebox, and due to be unveiled next Thursday.

Except that the T9 is based at the Swanage Railway not Mid Hants. (Although MHR already has 506 and until recently 925 in SR livery).Swanage does have a couple of Maunsell coaches in traffic or soon to be. Will be interesting to see what happens when 563 is restored and how their livery policy develops.

Anyway all entirely off topic. Are any more items of rolling stock planned to be moved from Washford to MHR?

Well as Tormorgaig says, so long as 120 is overhauled it doesn’t matter what colour it is painted.

Not sure why you liked that post though Martin, you have expressed a strong preference for BR black.

    From https://preservedbritishsteamlocomotives.com/peckett-sons-works-no-1788-kilmersdon-0-4-0st/
Kilmersdon was a dirty unmarked grey at the Colliery.
So painting it blue as an advert for the SDJR with the coach, or even Percy for Thomas days could be acceptable.
However were the Pines Express locos under LMR colours rather than LSWR? But blue will stand out for the trust even if it might jar with the MHS 50s feel?

i liked it because the date next Thursday , As regards liveries, Southern 1930's lined olive i find to be a bit drab, if she was turned out in the Drummond era dark green LSWR colours, i wouldn't mind that, because at least the lining lifts it, as would malachite, with yellow and black lining, elderly engines it seems to me suited the BR mixed traffic black lined livery because the way the lining was applied brought out the lines of the locos.

Actually, the really sad thing is that so many people want locos painted in BR liveries because that's how they remember them, ignoring the 100+ years of steam that pre-dated the BR of 1948-68 - which was arguably the least interesting period with the rationalisation, run-down and elimination of steam.

Well said (with the slight irony that your user name is 61624 rather than 1624 ;) ).

    +1 for BR black here

And no, I wasn't born in the steam age, so I'm not trotting out my youth

    Think you are right.
However wonder if a coach as a static display with Kilmersdon to represent an era will be sent before the gala at MHR (with a different headboard to this photo from 2016)?

Is this coach still at Washford? Is it likely to follow Kilmersdon to the MHR I wonder? Lack of covered accommodation would be the main issue I assume.

B.R./L.N.W.R. lined Black is fine if a bit samey. Early Southern olive green is great but the lettering of the later, duller mid-green is superior . However, we are dealing with visitor attractions nowadays and ''dull'' is hardly a selling point . For the South, malachite suggests itself . Looks particularly good on small machines also. Avoid B.R. green. Dullisimo! :)

How about you paint the T9 light blue with red and yellow lining, put a big number 2 on the tender and stick a face on the front... ;)
I always think that it's nice to go for a change of livery between overhauls, simply to enable the loco to more actively display a different part of its history. BR Black made a lot of sense especially when it was initially at Bodmin as T9s in BR Black on the old Withered Arm was very much recreating a bit of local rail history. But it's been a while since anybody has been able to see a T9 running in anything other than BR black, so time for a change? A different shade of LSWR to the T3 to complement it? Southern Green or Black?
As has been said before, we will all have our preferences but at the end of the day, a T9 running in whatever paint scheme is the ultimate goal, and it's great that Swanage are being given the opportunity to offer that for more years to come

I agree. Variety is the spice of life and considering that most engines will have carried a range of colours why not take advantage of it.

*cue the authenticity police to tell us that a loco can't carry such and such scheme because the number of rivets is wrong

Oh goodness, I hope you're not tempting fate with that remark!

Not that I'm saying anything bad about the MHR, or predicting anything bad for their future, far from it. I'm more thinking of the unpredictability of fate; the WSR must have seemed a safe home, several decades ago.

    Noel

PS: I wish that NatPres had an 'ignore posts about liveries' option (to go along with the 'ignore poster X' option - that won't help, too many otherwise-interesting people stray into that territory). Not that I don't see the point of a certain amount of thoughtful discussion about them (e.g. Jamessquared's post above), but most of it reminds me of the joke about the drunk looking for his lost keys under the streetlight (everybody can be an expert with a few keystrokes) - while other things that should get attention (like very prominent lines taking their eye off the ball) don't get much - until a disaster has fully developed itself.
