Well, and there it is - thanks very much!

Yes, the battery box on the front on unmodified WC/BBs is the AWS battery box, and SEMG's MN data suggests that all the MNs were rebuilt before being AWS fitted, or were fitted during the rebuild, so if '11 is going to carry AWS (not sure why it necessarily would unless it is going main line) then a new arrangement would presumably be needed.

The power for lighting on a Bulleid pacific is provided by a Stones electric generator under the cab on the driver's side.

Should be interesting to see what other equipment will be needed on the mainline in the coming years. I don't think it will be long before hardwired GSM-R will be made mandatory .

Thanks, its just a shame that both locomotives that currently have high sided tenders are both in Malachite as we've could have stuck one behind 35006 for a gala.

I think it was 35018 British India Line, immediately after it was rebuilt, as part of testing, the raves created a tunnel the cables to the dynamometer car could be routed through. I've seen a picture of it in a book, but can't find it online right now

It was 35020 "Bibby Line" (the second rebuild) - there is a photo of her in that condition (rebuilt, high-sided tender) in "Bradley" with the GWR dynamometer car immediately behind. Retaining the high sides for the test loco gave better fixing for the cables to the dynamometer car and also apparently more protection to the coal space where on occasion a member of the test staff travelled!

Interestingly, that tender was repainted with the lining done as a panel and the raves a broad black band, with the emblem lowered (i.e. painted to resemble a cut-down tender ...) After the dynamometer trials were over, it was transferred to "Clan Line" but not repainted, presenting a somewhat odd appearance with the loco having lining bands but the tender panelled.

I think someone posted some pictures of the loco in this condition before, possibly in the Bulleid thread, thanks for confirming that it was 35020 as I was fairly sure that was the loco.

I did find this photo on flickr which shows 35020 with a non cut down tender.

Caption states "35020 BIBBY LINE standing in Salisbury North Sidings prior to working a test train - 21 June 1956
The second rebuilt Merchant Navy to emerge from Eastleigh works, standing here coupled to the ex-GWR Dynometer car prior to working a test train to Exeter. Earlier the first rebuild, 35018, worked the down Atlantic Coast Express"

Is there a shot of Clan Line with that tender in that condition somewhere? I'd love to see that!

    Just interested.

In my post 744 suggested that to save money owners of MN, WC, and BB locos might consider pooling of tenders.
Reply 745 said that the tenders were quite different plus subsets of each type.
    Now post 763 has written:
"Its just a shame that both locomotives that currently have high sided tenders are both in Malachite as we've could have stuck one behind 35006 for a gala"

Are the tenders compatable to be interchanged between the three classes, and if so is the difference purely in the superstructure and not the chassis ?

Also do these tenders have BFB or spoked wheels ?

    A lot of variation - there’s a guide here: https://www.southern-locomotives.co.uk/Class_Details/Bulleid_Light_Pacific_Tenders.html

    and here:

    https://sremg.org.uk/steam/mn-ten.shtml
    https://sremg.org.uk/steam/blp_ten.html

Tender wheels are BFB, not spoked.

The new tender built for 35006 had disc wheels ex class 40 IIRC.

Our plan is to use BFB wheels on our tender, when the time comes.

    AAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH

    In Humour !!!!

Before I loose the will to live can a WC/BB tender be usefully attached to a MN ???

I completeley understand that there are many different water/coal capacities, plus many different top of superstructure differences, but us old fossils are dying out rapidly and Mr/Mrs average with their 2.4 children would have 0.01% interest in the sublteties of Eastleigh tender designs and water/coal capacities .

For the third time is the chassis/width/shovelling plate compatible between the different classes and forget the superstructure variations ?

I now read that the tender of 35006 is desecrated with ex class 40 wheels-----------complete heracy.

I dearly wish I had only stuck to LNER classes much more logical .

I believe class 47 wheels have been used on some Bulleid tenders in preservation too.

However I think SLL have arranged production of new BFB wheels for their tenders, and made them available to other owning groups. So no excuses any more!

When first steamed at the GCR in the 1990s, 34039 and 35005 swapped tenders. Does that answer your question?

The links that Tom has shared suggest the answer has to be yes :

In preservation and accepting that tanks will have been replaced with differing designs ...
    3122 runs with 34101 Hartland (Jan 1945 for 35012)
    3130 runs with 34067 Tangmere (Jun 1945 for 35020)
    3343 runs with 34105 Swanage (Nov 1948 for 35025)
3348 runs with Boscastle (Apr 1949 for 35030)

I believe the tender that ran in preservation with 35027 Port Line had also been used with more than one Light Pacific. :

Just another thought on SR tenders, a bit of a diversion but here goes.

In the fifties I saw many different combinations of MN, WC, and BB lcos and tenders, and must admit I was pretty dismissive about it. What really caught my attention though was a Schools class loco in the early 60s it might have been either 32 or 36 fitted with a double bogie LN tender, now that WAS interesting and impressive.
I have failed completeley to locate a photo of said loco, is it possible for someone to post a picture ?

    In hope:
