30912 Downside got the tender from LN No. 30865 at the same time. This was all part of the round-robin of tenders to provide 6 wheel tenders to S15s transferring from the Western to the Central section.

You too then have seen that video on YouTube of UP Challangers and Big Boys to the background of Queen's Fat Bottomed Girls:). It is certainly better music than you have on many videos. I'd post the link if I knew how to.:(

I was actually educated - well sort of :(- at Downside from January 1965 and it is sobering to recall that the loco's nameplate had already been on display in the main hall for nearly two years when I got there.

They would have run out of numbers in the 900 series long before ever getting to Garth Hill Secondary Modern :(

Are you sure it was off the loco? A Kings Wimbledon plate was up at my school, but I always understood that it, and the model of the locomotive, were presented at the timing of the naming.

Perhaps they’d have got into the 1000 series - or would there have been too much copper?

Solid LSWR territory, though the SER were interlopers one station down the line - nothing copper capped for almost 5 or 6 miles. But put it this way: by time they got to even considering my school, you'd have been in Black 5 territory as to numbers of locos in front of "Garth Hill School".

My old school had it's nameplate on show, with a note to say that the plate was presented by BR when the engine was withdrawn.

Given that they could do non stop to Southampton with a 6 wheeled tender, the LN tender makes first stop Exeter Central look possible

I doubt it, at least with a reasonable load - you only increase water capacity from 4,000 to 5,000 gallons.

The plate at Downside also had a works photo of the loco, saying that it was presented to the school on withdrawal from service in 1962.

The other plate from Kings Wimbledon was purchased direct from BR, when the locomotive was scrapped, by Edgar Larkin, for his son, who had attended the school. Mr Larkin was assistant general manager of BR workshops prior to his retirement.

It sounds as if there were three Kings Wimbledon plates if the one at the school was presented at the time of its nameing and not when it was withdrawn as was the case with Downside..

That’s the unknown, and unfortunately the teacher who told me the background does not long after I left so I can’t check my 30 year old memory.

It's still there, a friend of mine taught at Downside for a couple of years recently and it's very much got pride of place.
