I did wonder, given that the cylinder block and connecting rods are from an industrial locomotive, could the crank axle and other driving axle also come from that source with new large diameter wheels? Or does the cost of refurbishment, certification etc make new axles more viable?

Hi Phil, with the restrictions on the re-use of 'old parts' in the rotating systems - it is unlikely the ORR would agree the 'Grandfather Rights' of reclaimed parts. We have already been caught out on axle standards with our new bogie wheelset axles requiring a more rigorous ultra-sonic testing to meet the new documentation requirements - happily they passed.
In the case of the Crank Axle, the larger wheels impose higher stresses - and again the 'Grandfather Rights' of that would apply to the original loco for which it was made - the only Crank Axle that would have such rights would be a GCR Cass 2 - and they were all scrapped. There is an ongoing Finite Element Analysis project ongoing with FEA-Solutions (UK) to review the fabricated axle design.
The other thing that we have to consider is the fact we are designing & building the loco to be able to travel at up to 60mph - not far short of 567's original speed capability - however it may well be years before it would be able to travel at that speed on a heritage railway - however it will meet GCR's requirements for the Mail Drop' trains when completed...
Sadly at present, a load of design work is held up due to our Chief Engineer fully working on the EMRT/GCR(N) Bridge repair issues, and our Chairman has been co-opted into the GCR(N) board to take on more of the (political?) work. That is why we are still wishing everyone a Merry Christmas/New Year on the 567 Website - plenty of news to update the site.

    Thanks for explaining that LeGA.
I am a bit disappointed that the website is not updated - but appreciate the situation. I did remember that somebody was supposed to be appointed to the publicity role a few months ago........ but there has been nothing visible to the supporters or general public.

The Website has been updated not with a Happy Easter message, but with great pictures of the Bogie axle assemblies, showing the fantastic machining work done by CMS. They are now at Ruddington ready for first coat painting...
Engineering design and draughting work still held up on Driving Wheel assemblies due to ongoing commitments of our Chief Engineer.

The Bogie Wheelsets have landed. Phosphate primer painted, journals greased ready for protective tape to be applied. Parked in front of 567's frames at Ruddington.

I hope they're securely stored away?- I don't hold much store in some people's ability to leave things alone.

In the latest "Main Line" it is said that the 567 group have been busy re-organising, and safely storing, the components already made for the engine. They have also reached over 200 supporters signed up, so the cash in hand, is there for more components to be ordered or made. There are also more CAD motion pictures (done by Mark Gooding), a modern irony, being used to make a Victorian locomotive!

It's ok, they are chained up...

Nice to see some bits of it all together.

It was a bit disappointing to be told that the latest (June) newsletter has been impossible to publish then, but will be combined with the Sept issue. Despite the turmoil at Ruddington I'm sure we could have been told of some recent progress.....

That last missive from NHR (think it was on FB a week or so ago) regarding current progress with the site, more or less confirmed that the Workshops were still off limits courtesy of the ORR, so nothing has been able to be done in there since their visitation last year.
I was tempted to go up to the 125 Group event this coming weekend and see what their take on it all is, but, as I've got 3 events to go to at the GCR between 4th Sept and 9th October, I'll save the 290 mile round trip to Ruddington until the 567 Members Day/AGM instead....

Thanks Johann...but I remember that they had been talking about more work being out-sourced (as per CMS Cepcor for the bogie wheelsets)....

There was more news about 567 in the latest "Main Line". The cash in hand situation is very good so hopefully some more parts will be ordered......

Bearing in mind that the updates in 'Mainline' have tended to be a few months adrift of the newsletters, I'm hopeful that the September newsletter brings tidings of the cash in hand having been exchanged for more components.

I just happened to look at their FB page and there is an image on there from Saturday with the comment that 6 people were working on the Frames of 567 at Ruddington that day.....

Presumably as the frames are outside and not in the workshops there are no restrictions on work being carried out there at the moment. I'm assuming that some sort of announcement will be made by the various groups or NHR when the workshops are able to open for business again.......
