Although I have quoted from Chris Osment's post (pasted above) I will also aim to address Pete Thornhill's comments.

I have yet to see the advert, but according to Flying Phil in post 3218 it does state 'due to retirement'. Surely Chris, even the most dedicated speculator would have to try very hard indeed to invent a web of intrigue around that statement of fact!

In answer to Pete - I agree there are many L&B members of advanced years who 'do the internet'. However, I can think of many younger members who I know who rarely, if indeed ever, look at the L&B website. All members are sent a copy of the newsletter and magazine through the post, hence my suggestion that is the better medium for initially sharing news with all members.

But such a statement was not in the early FB postings (see https://www.facebook.com/Lynton.Barnstaple/photos/a.544932122213530/5449648588408501/ for an example), which is why I had to make enquiries as to the reason for the vacancy.

interestingly down here in North Devon it has been well known for a good 18 months of the GM's planned retirement and relocation although i am led to believe he will be coming back and forth regularly during the summer to help out,if common sense prevailed the position would have been advertised a good 12 months ago and training could have taken place during last year when the railway was in and out of lockdown, outside working and being able to easily social distance would have created the ideal opportunity to educate the successful candidate in the railways maintenance and operation

"Would of been" has nothing whatsoever to do with a West Midlands accent, it's all down to people slavishly following those Americans! West Midlanders, of which I am very proud to say I am one, pronounce it in the proper English way-"would have been" or "would've been".

"So, he was, like, "I would of...""

Whose coat is that jacket? Now, in a minute. Where to is he? Hiya, butt. There's lovely, isn't it?

    See, I'm guilty too.

Sometimes companies (and churches with ministers) deliberatlty do not have any overlap, not to say the replaced person was bad, but so to give appointees a free hand and chance to bring fresh ideas and ways of working (even if someone already in the company).
Makes the selection harder as they will be restricted to someone with a lot of knowledge and experience.
The L and B is coming to some critical stages so hope they find the right person for the GM post.

It's super annoying, for sure, but might I gently point Honourable Members to the specific thread concerning "Use and Misuse of Language", currently lurking on p3 of General Chat?

Does that mean 'Where is he?'? In Bath, "where's it to?' is how natives might say 'where is it?', much to the confusion of the Ealing upon Avon lot. Could it be of Welsh origin?

No, used in Devon & Cornwall, too. "Where be to ?" Old dialect, not sloppy modern usage.

By no means impossible, but more likely from the linguistic substrate of Brythonic, the extinct ancestor of modern Welsh, Cornish, Breton and (also extinct) Cumbric.

I was tempted to comment that this thread appears to have gone somewhat off track. But then it dawned on me that on a clear day one can often see the Welsh coast from Killington Lane Station...

Here's to hoping for the resumption of regular (and relevant) stuff to get excited/worked up about. :)
