Any news on how the repair is going at Crewe. Would be an ideal addition to the SDR's 40th anniversary celebrations.

I have to admit that a 14xx is an important part of the South Devon Rly heritage. They have arranged a brilliant line up for the gala, but I did notice there were no 14xx locos. I'm sure they tried, but you can't win 'em all.

1420 at the South Devon, 1442 in Tiverton museum, 1450 in bits at Crewe, and 1466 somewhere in Didcot shed.

Most of them had gone by the early 60's, and none made it into Barry, so there we are. It's actually surprising that so many survived.

Queue? You mean there's a queue? Nah, it's not on the radar. Shame, as it'll have missed the 30th, 40th, and 50th anniversaries of the society that was formed to save it.

1442 is basically as-withdrawn by BR - there was a thread about it a few weeks back.

Yes 1420 is on the SDR but will not be ready for April 2009. Its in the queue behind 3205 and they also have 6412 to overhaul.
The 14XX class is perfect for the branch as they ran the service under BR right until the end in 1958. Freight was handled by 44xx then 45xx but with a speed restriction over the Dart bridge. 4555 was in evidence to the very end.

I don't think it was that surprising, They would been cheeper to preseve then something like a Hall...

Although on the other hand 1420 & 1450 were brought by the Dart Valley Railway Company who proberley had the money...

1442 at Tiverton really is ex-BR. There's a persistant rumour that the fire wasn't even dropped. It was stuffed and mounted outside for years.

Think of all the panniers that lasted right till the end of steam, yet the only one preserved was 9400... and it's not even a proper one. By the time the GWS had got round to buying their 14, most of the others had already gone.

As far as I'm aware 3205 won't be ready now till a lot later in the year but possibly next I think it depends on the boiler. She's in bits in the running shed at the moment, to make way for 5553 and 80064? in the shed.

I think 1420 is on the list after that as I think she has been started on or at the very least she is dismantled and then 6412, but there are more informed people that can comment than me, and plans do change.

Surely they were perfect in 1958 because there was next to no traffic and they were the smallest most economical loco around .....

Point taken but perfect for the Gala as could re-create trains of yesteryear. By the way before taken out of service 1420 regularly took 5 coaches up and down the branch.

I've had 1450 on load 5 on the GlosWarks but then again that's as flat a pancake compared with some other lines.

Getting back to the point, 1450 will be heading back to the DFR in a few weeks time in operational condition, starting a new 10 year boiler ticket, so the latest 'dfr magazine' states.
