It does not appear to be the trip I was thinking of.
Just found the video from 2014. 34046 captured sliding into Salisbury right at the beginning:

See what you mean. That is worrying, and it wasn't even raining. The problems on the Gloucester trip I referred to were apparently caused by heavy braking on the long descent from Sapperton.

It's interesting to see that 40.145 ran wrong road through Middle Hill and the Box tunnel yesterday while en route from Bristol to Euston.

Thanks to Glen Batten for the photograph. <BJ>

Also interesting ,it ran via Weedon on the WCML,en route from Euston to Crewe ,instead of via Northampton the usual route for ECS trains. Photo of 40145 near Weedon attached.

What you do if a steam engine is sliding depends how serious it is ,that's is if you a approaching something like a stop block fast or not. Take the brake of and reapply ,try again ,if sliding still continues ,brake of again ,then drop some sand down, that 99 times out of a hundred will do the trick If in a difficult situation ,brake off, and sand down first time. When a engine slides ,everything goes quiet in the cab ,wheel are not going round etc, it takes a bit of experience but not a lot to realise this .I worked with a driver who had many years of driving ,but still had not got it sust.

Rather depends on the loco having one (most of my acquaintance don't!)

Of course. Was thinking main line. I gather that it was the immediate warning of a problem along the green corridor of the line west of Salisbury in the recent past. Rubbish rail head conditions and an observant driver plus the space ahead to resolve the problem meant that there were no consequences. The fact that the problem on the LSL trip went for so long without being spotted is a tad worrying. If it was the tender then you do hope that the diesel wasn't manned as the cab was within a metre or so of the signs.

Indeed - hence my #131. That said, the only times I can recall that tender wheels have been reported as presenting a problem are when the handbrake is left on that suggests an operating mistake by someone. Either way, let's hope that repairs can be made fairly rapidly back at base and the '5' is back in action soon.

With no experience of loose coupled trains todays steam driver will not encounter the situation very often, it happened daily in steam days. Speedos weren't fitted until the mid fifties ,and then only on express loco's for the start. There was a pile up in the mid 50s ,Didcot I think ,due to the driver taking a crossing to fast.HM inspectors report said that all passenger loco's should be fitted with speedo's .No doubt someone's going to say ,what about so and so class that had them long before.A4s for instance.

Passed 45231 on a low loader on the A42 at about 8.30 this morning, heading east towards the M1, near Ashby-de-la-Zouch.
