Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I recall reading that 2999 has a Modified Hall/Grange/Hall "improved draughting" chimney which is 2" narrower than the normal type fitted to Saints. A capuchon (wind deflector) has been added to make the appearance correct. If you look at photos of Saints with the taller chimney, the one on 2999 looks fractionally narrower. I think it also has the improved draughting blastpipe compatible with the chimney, without the jumper ring.
Judging by the videos of 2999 on test on the SVR, the terrific bark of the "ID" locos is well and truly there!

    So it’s a ‘Modified Saint’ then? ;)

There was mention of 2999 possibly being turned at Kidderminster today. Does anyone know if this is due to happen and at what time please?
    Regards.

The plan is to have the loco turned today. Times are fluid today as railway in operation so will happen when it happens.

That would be better, the only chance of seeing it with the GW set is the morning train out of Bridgnorth and the toplights will be at the back.

Yes it has, I think it was chosen more because it was cheaper than making a brand new one. Maindy had a plain top blastpipe, which I assume has been used. I don't know if this applies to Saints, but after jumpers were introduced plain tops were not necessarily phased out - some classes carried on using both, interchangeably. The ID tops which came later were narrower. The Saints appear to have carried at least four different types of chimney during their lives. I don't know how much they differed between each other in internal layout, or with the Modified chimney, but the Modified chimneys have the same internals as used on the early 43xx's, so it's possible that the difference between 2999 and a traditional Saint isn't that great. It would be interesting to know. One thing I can guarantee is that there'll be more than one smokebox drawing for the class! Speaking of which, there's a nice drawing of an early Std. 1 smokebox in the Engine House at Highley.

Despite the journey to get there I am planning a trip to the Gala. The package on offer looks to be an excellent one even if you don't do every return trip. Would have preferred 1501 instead of 813 but there you go.

Would of also preferred 1501 seeing its only got ten months remaining on its ticket. But 813 is a lovely little thing.

Thing is 1501 will see much more use than 813 over the season which only has a couple of running days penned in this year so it makes sense to give it a turn now.

I am sure that 1501 will make it’s curtain call at the ASG anyway.

Potentially on the Season Finale Gala 5-7 November, Festive season services and Feb '22 half-term too?

I forgot about the November gala but I meant galas appearances, hopefully over the festive season and Feb half term too as you say, would be good!
