No I do not currently volunteer
I am probably an audience of one for this particular thing but part of blog on what say an axle box/bogie/brake exam consists of might be interesting (to me at any rate).

Matt and myself are happy to talk privately about details, share our thoughts and advice, but we don't want detail particulars on a public forum as we are not an engineering authority and do not wish to be used as a source of technical information. That is down to a particular railways safety case and how they wish to manage their own engineering processes. While we examine the vehicles and provide the record cards and examination sheets to the railway, the GCR undertake an FTR as independant assurance.

As a source of our examination, we use 3 BR sources for our guidence.

BR 1183 - Regulations for repairing wagons

BR 11819 - Regulations for the Guidance of Train Examiners and Oilers

BR11889 - Planned preventive maintenance schedule for BR freight stock and departmental vehicles.

For each vehicle we conduct a condition survey, looking at the following:

    Wheelset
    Axle boxes
    Suspension
    Underkeeps
    Underframe
    Brake blocks
    Brake gear
    Brake safety loops
    Handbrake
    Brake cylinder
    Brake hoses
    Release chords
    Buffers
    Couplings
    Drawhook
    Lamp brackets
    Stepboards
    Label clips
    Door levers
    Doors
    Bodywork
    Any Load (containers etc)
    Handrails
    Roof coverings
    Any securing chains
    Ride height (measuring buffer heights)

And finally record any other details that stand out to us as requiring attention. We then of course rectify, remove or record as applicable.

You've really outdone yourselves this week. The weekly updates are a serious piece of work in themselves, but the rate of output of wagons is frankly astonishing. The transformation of the Esso wagon from what could only be described as anonymous to showcase should really give other railways pause for thought in what's possible. More power to your collective elbows!

Inspirational stuff, absolutely brilliant. One small point, as a signwriter (sadly lapsed) I was taught mahlstick not maulstick, or is that just a Southern thing? :)

I always thought it was a mahl stick too, although I'm just self-taught from youtube videos so don't pay too much attention to me!
