It was heading east on the A42, near Ashby-de-la-Zouch, wrong direction for Crewe...

Toton maybe? There’s a wheel lathe there.

Is there not weight restrictions on the M6? Seem to remember something in the Allelys TV series saying they had to divert around the M6 when taking Britannia to the SVR. I may be well off the mark though.

That routing could make sense in terms of avoiding the elevated sections of the M6, using the A50 to come back across.

The photos of the skates fitted to one wheelset of the tender do suggest that it’s the tender with bad flats, not the loco.

Seems like it and that's consistent with the video showing the smoke/dust from the wheel still sliding as the loco pulled away. So it appears to have been a mechanical problem that caused the wheel to remain locked after the braking. At least it's reassuring to know that the loco is fine.

Would also possibly explain 4920's rather convoluted (M1-M62) route to Carnforth?
