Good to see the progress. What a difference between the east and west of Somerset.

Progress looking good! There looks to be some wastage of the frames, I guess this is within the limits allowed.

This week the cylinders and valve chests are being machined. Both were very rusty. ?Below is a short video clip of re-boring of cylinder. You will note the amount of material that has had to be removed and it seems that the cylinders will need sleeving.

Is the cylinder boring done in house or do you bring a contractor in ?

Thank you for that link. It is interesting to see the radial trailing axlebox assembly. It would also be interesting to know what fettling was done to this and the horn guides. It would be difficult to machine the horn guide plates to a 12ft-ish radius, and possibly these are just cleaned up and made smooth, similar for the rubbing plates on the axlebox tunnel?

The boiler was rolled on 9 Mar 21 to permit work in the area of the foundation ring.

While wandering around the shed at Didcot, I was most surprised to notice that while the GWR 45XX/55XX Small Prairies have pony trucks at both ends, the Large Prairies have pony truck at front and radial truck at rear (with a rear main-frame inset to accommodate). Among other British 2-6-2T designs, there also seems to have been a mix of rear truck types.

I believe that different types of pony trucks have different harmonic characters and so the risk of a build up of resonance is avoided (if I understood it right). I'm sure that someone will be along shortly to put me right!

A couple of photos to show the state of play with 4110 at the moment. Over the winter covid has severely restricted the number of people with access to the loco, but progress is still being made. 20210404_170235.jpg 20210404_170039.jpg 20210404_170112.jpg

The remains of the bunker are now finally scrapped. Construction of its replacement continues, see previous post above.

Indeed so. They don't always get the attention deserved whereas the sins of others are intensively catalogued.

The lower sections of the throat plate and door plate have been welded. In the background can be seen the new tanks under construction (the orange piece inside the crane).

Following on from the update above, the left and right firebox sides have now been prepared and positioned ready for welding later this week. The outlined areas mark out various stay lengths.

A trip out the shed today to fit the cab roof gave a good photo opportunity.[IMG][IMG]
