I’d agree with that, but with the reservation that railway preservation ought to be about more than just the 1948-1968 era.

Yes, there's a whole century and more before 1948 ...

And in the context of the Swanage Railway the thought of a 130 year old locomotive running up and down the line is just as appealing as a 'youngster' on the Bluebell of only 110 or so years!

Indeed. In the meantime we have to make do with the O1, which is a mere 125 years old this year ...

(Funny how age creeps up on you. It doesn't seem that long ago that the centenarian locos were still a minority, but pretty soon even the modern Maunsell locos are going to be hitting that landmark).

And back in 1968 ish some thought that 'heritage' would be just the Bluebell plus one or two other lines. Little did they (or we) know!

For sure! Heresy for some but I like diesel heritage lines as well as steam. Accurately representing all aspects of historic railways from the early years on is of course impossible not least because of H&S but it is good that so much survives.

Only issue is where there’s a mainline connection or incoming excursions then consistent terminology is preferable

You miss my point, "On a forum with many crossovers between the mainline and preserved lines" refers to the National Preservation forum. It is the forum which I declare has the many crossovers!

    Fair comment.
I was referring to railways themselves rather than the forum using compatible terms with the mainline for operational consistency (eg signaller) which is also valid but agreed, not the point you were making.
I guess where folks are involved in preserved railways it’s understandable when they use those same terms on the forum

Partial eclipse in our lounge about 45 minutes ago when Eddystone went past on its low loader. They do look big at the end of your front garden!
Like the black backing on the nameplate.
One day I may be lucky enough to get an image of one passing my house.

Looks like a right kerfuffle getting locos in and out of Herston works. Do any plans exist to one day built a rail connection to the works?

Looking at the location on google maps, it looks like it would require a lot of land to give the workshop a workable rail connection. I would assume this is in the 'nice to have' but too expensive category.

Locos in and out of Herston works, whilst not convenient, isn't that much of a fuss nowadays, its fairly routine.
