In the last part of my working life, I had eleven waste heat boilers under my wing at various sites. The next due inspection rarely coincided with a planned downtime, which was three to four monthly, so it was almost routine for me to request a Reg 9 extension to the due date. so we didn't have to shut down early. Now I'm just involved with loco boilers, I still request them from time to time when it is convenient to do so but you really have to have a reason for doing it, though. Do other railways ever do this?

If you want to get back in touch with such things now you're a gentleman of leisure like me, it can be arranged. You'll just need to spend more time in Yorkshire.;)

It is now 14 months since I have been to Yorkshire which I accept is much too long.

There are some more photos of A4s on goods. In this thread (and some familiar names)

I think that mainline certification is still seven years unless an intermediate overhaul is carried out. If not then the loco has to work out its remaining boiler certificate on heritage lines. Perhaps someone can confirm if that is still correct

The answer to your confusion lies in MT276. Whilst the PSSR regulations do not lay down any periods for examinations and tests and these are in the owners written scheme of examinations, Network Rail do lay them down in their documentation covering operation of steam locomotives (MT276). There's perhaps a bit of history involved here. The PSSR is effectively the modern equivalent of the Factories Act Steam Boiler Regulations, which originally laid down the 14 month period and required no part of a boiler to go unexamined beyond 10 years. However, these regulations specifically exempted locomotive boilers on railways so they were outside the regulations. BR and its predecessors had their own rules on boilers and inspections. I haven't got these to hand but I'm reasonably certain that they laid down that no boiler should go without a thorough internal and external examination beyond 7 years (although the reality was that most boilers were examined at more frequent intervals.) when MT276 was produced, it essentially copied what BR had done in the days of steam. and required a thorough internal examination every seven years. this is why locos operatingh on NR can only run for 7 years but can continue to operate on heritage railways beyond that time., as is the case with 60009.

Does anyone know when 60009 is booked to work ELR services? It's a blooming long drive from Bedfordshire to go on the off chance.

60009's last main line operation was in early March last year. I seem to recall that it was scheduled to do at least one more main line run shortly afterwards, but that that was cancelled because of Covid. Was that the end of a seven-year period of operation or had that already been extended? Even if it had been eight years, it's still only nine years now, so the loco could continue to run on the ELR for a while yet if the boiler inspector allows.

See my previous post. I think No 9 had an intermediate overhaul and retune that gave it 10 years on the mainline

I'd had a look but couldn't see anything regarding a loco roster. May have been looking in the wrong place of course.

I am sure she will be a huge attraction, whenever she is rostered.

    Found this on the website:

"34092 – was steam tested last week having not been in steam since January 2020, no major issues found, loco will be now be boxed up and made ready for crew training days on 23/24/25 April.

60009 – Minor repairs to steam valves and fittings have been undertaken and heavy clean of bottom end frames and underneath to remove years of grime and dirt. Loco requires a spring change before entering service."

Looking at the timetable for this weekend, it would appear that the steam services can be operated by one locomotive.
My money would be on 34092, but, of course, I could be wrong

Slightly odd terminology - maybe it is a Lancashire thing!

We would use "boxing up" to mean refitting mud hole doors, washout plugs, refitting gauge glasses etc., and then filling with water, after a washout or cold inspection. So doing a steam test before boxing up might be somewhat problematic!
