58022 - the power unit was removed on Saturday 15th August - it has been sold to a company which specialises in refurbishing old diesel units for further use.

A terrible photo, but tonight 4 of the Trustees have had a very enjoyable chat with Stan Fletcher our Centenarian President, via Zoom tonight. I’m glad to report he is in good health and looking forward to getting to Wirksworth to check up on what we have been doing.

Today we had a fantastic working day at Wirksworth, mainly working on the 58. All the engine bay roof panels and the body side frameworks were moved up to the workshop. We collected many nuts and bolts and other bits and pieces from the engine bay, and removed a large amount of rust and muck. We assembled a complete set of orange cab panels for the cab that we will be keeping. Finally we tarped over one end of the loco. The other end will be covered over when we have completed a few more jobs on it. Thanks to all our volunteers today - Tony Thompson, Phil Stainbridge, Alex Homer, Paul Godridge, and regulars Tony and Bernard all put in a fantastic days works. Those frames were really heavy!

We have agreed the purchase of a steam heat boiler for 10000. This boiler was last used in 55019. It’s currently a stripped shell, but work is in hand to acquire the missing parts and a supply of spares. The one in the photo is from 55015, which the DPS are kindly letting us use as a pattern for any missing parts. 10000 originally had a Clarkson boiler, which was replaced with a Spanner Mk1. Our boiler is a Mk2b, so not identical, but as close as is practical.

Another step forward with the cab removal. 5 of the 8 mounting bolts are out. We have also made progress on disconnecting pipework and electrical connections, and done a little more preparation on class 58 cab front parts. Another interesting item turned up recently - an ID tag from 37222 on one of our Reavell exhausters.

Gareth and Phil at TAS Engineering in Burton-on-Trent have been looking at new seats for 10000, that will fit onto original 1960s seat bases. It’s been a challenge as there are no drawings and very few photos. They are starting to look really good now. Thanks chaps!

Another step in the right direction today. The bogie spiders have been collected and will be put into indoor storage where they can dry out. Thanks to one of our Trustees, Hanson, for sorting out the transport and providing the storage.

    NEWS UPDATE

    A) Good news and bad news. The good news is, some of the things we have been working on for a while look like they are coming together. Hopefully we will be able to purchase some refurbished traction motors and about 8 tonnes of bogie spares. We also should soon be able to purchase all the parts we need to complete our train heat boiler, plus spares. We also have a place at the EVR to put the bogies where we can work on them at our leisure. All fantastic news. The bad news is, we had not expected it all to happen at once! We have some plans to raise money, but if everything works out, the bottom line is, the bank balance isn’t going to cover it. This has been a challenging year, but we need your help now more than ever. If you are able to make a donation, however big or small, you will be making the recreation of 10000 a possibility. The move of the bogies to EVR is all sorted and arranged, we just need to do it. As soon as the details of the bogie and boiler deals are confirmed we will be making the details available.

    DSC_8919.JPG

    B) Meanwhile, we have come to a deal to purchase a large quantity of boiler parts from the Deltic Preservation Society. Once it’s all sorted out and catalogued, we will be passing on anything we don’t need to other preservation groups. We now have everything we need to steam the boiler, plus a supply of spares. All we have to do now is build it! This is a great boost to the project and we would like to thank the DPS for coming up with an excellent deal that benefits both our groups. If you are able to help us out with a donation towards this project, you can donate through the website at https://lms10000.co.uk/donate

    C) £5,663.51 has just been paid to us from the HMRC regarding Gift Aid ! Thanks to Bernard Caddy for his hard work compiling the application.

    gift-aid_image3-500x171 smaller.jpg

    D) We were going to wait until next year to do a run of the 10001 worksplates, but we have had 5 requests already. If we can get it up to 10, we will get a run of them ordered. All the plates are numbered, starting from number 6, and as with the 10000 plates, we will only be doing a maximum of 100. You can choose your own plate number if you wish. The plates are solid chrome plated brass, as were the originals. If you would like one, they are £200 plus £12 for UK postage. they can be mounted on a wooden background, which is £45 extra. We can do international postage, please contact us for a price. Get in touch via info@lms10000.co.uk

    E) In Centenary Works, all the new racking down the right hand side is labelled with location numbers. Everything that goes on those shelves from now on needs to be on the stock control system before it goes on the shelf. There is another rack on the left hand side for stuff that needs to go on the system

    F) Refurbishment has taken place of parts taken off the cab of 58022. In time this cab will be placed alongside Centenary Works as part of our visitor centre and garden area

    b 118154703_10224458780045308_3894311401433027124_n cropped.jpg

    G) The Society has commissioned a painting, copies of which are to be solely presented to Notch 8 donors. Artist Mark langley writes:
I'm quite a way through now. It was a good job I put it down for a couple of weeks to let it dry a bit. The train itself is about 97% right, refining to do on details and colour here and there.
I visited the location when returning from the Lakes last month and snapped a few pictures of how Scout Green, Shap looks today. I was entertaining the idea of moving the setting along by 30 feet to include the bridge. But I decided due to the way the bridge top took away the train's wheels somewhat it reduce the purity of the composition, so I ditched that idea. I do prefer the farmer-build messy fence back in 1953/54 as it typifies how remote grazing farmland looks on the hills. It adds to the stark weather beaten setting.

We had another productive day at Centenary Works. Another successful test of the brakes on bogie 139 was carried out today. After 30 plus years of inactivity, all the joint are now loosening up nicely.

After a thorough tidying session, getting rid of unwanted rubbish, cutting up ex 58 steelwork and stripping off reuseable components. We had the fun job of operating the brakes on bogie 139 as designed......with air. They were operated for a period of 3 hours. and the rigging is freeing up nicely we have a maximum movement of 75mm from full off to full on. We have three cylinders that work great and one that has gone to TAS for a new gasket to be fitted. Gallons of fluids used and we have nearly got 139s brakes working both on and off, as in service.
