I think Liam was thinking of a 'rear gunner'.

Indeed I was. I'm sure recent Pendle Dalemsan trips have taken a diesel but previous trips years ago have not.

We need a 'smoke report' from Carnforth & not saying 'something green'

I can't see any reason for anything but a solo run on this route.

A succession of whistles, both mandatory and (many more) voluntary ones, heralded BIL’s approach to Hoghton summit. As the loco came nearer the sound from the exhaust increased; not the usual swoosh, swoosh, swoosh but a crisper sounding 3 cylinder beat – 35018 was working!

Then BIL swept under the occupation bridge as she approached Chapel lane; she looked magnificent. The cool and overcast conditions ensured that a generous volume of exhaust lingered in the cutting. Clouds of steam clung to the safety valves before being swept away only to constantly replenished and renewed by more steam from the boiler; despite the climb it appears that the boiler was “at or near the mark”.

BIL swept beneath the bridge, whistling again for the half dozen or so individuals who were assembled by the foot crossing. Now beyond the summit the exhaust beat quickened rapidly before the train curved to the left and on towards Pleasington. Around 2L, but who cares - steam is back!

In recent times WCRC doesn’t seem to have operated many steam-hauled trips that involve a climb of Hoghton bank (from the west). Does anyone know if BIL has done it before?

On the way home, the car clocked up its 500th mile since the start of the lockdown in March 2020. As I returned home Mrs W was about to leave for the short walk to the local pharmacy for her 2nd jab.

Sounded fine at Selside on the approach to Ribblehead. Slow, mind, but sun and a merchant on the S&C, now at the pub... what could be better?

The preceding unit 1M53 also lost time between Ribblehead and Appleby.
I guess there is a TSR up there. Any local knowledge?

    Cheers, Neil

A couple of TSRs a long one from Garsdale station over the viaduct, through the tunnel and another hslf mile, then what looked like a very recent bank slip down to the track after Low Gill crossing. Also stopped for a splash at Langwathby.
Not to be out polished by that other MN, support crew seen polishing the tender during the Blackburn stop. :)

Felt so good to get out with my camera today...first time since last September. Helwith Bridge provided it's usual welcome with blue skies and sunshine...until the train was due! Did I care we lost the sun? Not one jot! Just glad to be there and see steam on the main line :)

First time out since last October so a bit rusty filming and editing but it is what it is:

35018 at Hoghton and just after Settle Jn.

Anyway, she's come back Carlisle to Settle Jn running time of 99 mins, with what looks like around 23/24 mins Appleby to Ais Gill, so that is a pretty good run.
