A serious question; Clan Line regularly takes over 500 tons round this circuit unassisted so why did this one need an oilbox on the back?

Dragging the stock back out of Victoria back to Acton for servicing prior to the evening run. Probably easier to leave the diesel on the back than find multiple l/e paths.

They could do what happens on the Belmond, after assisting up Grosvenor Bank, it drops off at the top and then stabled until the train comes back

You’ve still got to find somewhere to stable it.

35028 is classified 8P whereas 60103 is 7P, so it could be surmised that 35028 is less likely to need assistance. The class 47 was 'dead' in tow whenever I saw the train but I suppose it could be used if problems were encountered. More pertinently, I imagine it was easier to leave it on than find a space for it elsewhere.

The diesel obviously helped up Gomshall, possibly also up out of Redhill - do the maths - but it shouldn't have been needed elsewhere.

I think it the past WCRC may have also used Willesden SWS, but even that is somewhat inconvenient from Victoria.

On both occasions I saw it climbing Gomshall Bank the diesel didn't seem to be helping. It might've been lifting its own weight, but without the water stop at Shalford it went through there a lot quicker than usual, so had a good attack up the climb.

The 47 was doing some work on its slow crawl through the traffic jam down through Woking in the evening, but I think that was more for slow (very slow) control than traction.

Why is it obvious, when others have reported no help from the diesel? Not sure what maths has to do with it; I'm just going by what I saw and others have reported.

Sorry. I thought that it was obvious that a Class 7 plus 12 plus a Cl 47 = 16 equivalent would be hard pushed to get up a 1 in 100 without some help. At the very least the diesel would try to carry its own weight.

Considering the loads that were sometimes hauled during the War, I believe the Class 7 could take 16 equivalent up 1 in 100 – but pretty slowly, and it's not the treatment that FS deserves nowadays. So I too would expect the diesel to provide at least enough power to move itself up the bank.
