Yes indeed . It worked because the number of tickets sold were well below the seats available. A good model which worked.

I am astonished by this thread sometimes. Anyone would think there was some kind of conspiracy, but there isn't and hasn't been.

I am content to answer Don's points about yesterday's hiccup with the Wanderer. So far as I can tell at present it was dealt with without becoming a major issue for anyone, staff or passenger.

As to the difference between the two galas, I thought I had answered this one, but basically Big Al has understood matters very well, and the only other thing to add is that the gala was pre 17th May and part of the need for the two galas to be different was partly driven by consultation with local public health and their views were driven by a change in the guidance issued by government between the two galas. We had a choice. Change approach or not run. However it is very clear that not everyone wants to go "free for all" just yet so we haven't gone that route for everything.

LOL. On the one hand you complain because the MHR had its train in the wrong formation and you couldn't sit in your booked seats, and then you boast about how in 1968-71 life carried on as normal during a pandemic.

So tell us, how did you run your railway during the 68 pandemic?

On a positive note. Huge thanks to all exhibitors and staff, and ALL those that braved the weather to enjoy a cracking weekend. Looks like by demand from the traction engine folk we will be holding this again next year!

Highlight of the day today was the demonstration this afternoon by the steam crane....how to lift a boiler. Kilmersdon gets smaller and smaller !

There was no working party atop the hill yesterday for various reasons, the weather forecast being the main one!!

So, rather than do more OT at work, or sit at home, I thought I'd see what the vintage vehicle weekend was all about....... :Shifty:

Must say I was pleasnatly surprised by the amount of folks on the railway having a good time, with the trains looking well loaded & plenty of folks admiring the exhibits - even managed to catch up with a few faces I haven't seen since last year...... and just as I was thinking of calling it a day, I bumped into the Watercress Line Films Unit & got roped into helping with various bits & pieces - thanks Will!! :Arghh:

Watch out for the video next week & no, I'm not in it, thankfully - I'll stick to behind the scenes. :)

It seriously looked like everyone was out to enjoy themselves & hopefully this is an event that will grow & grow, it seriously deserves to! :D

Some pics of the goings on.....

I'm starting to get used to reading Don's demands every few weeks & how things should be done, how about Don you put some of those 57 years of experience into running the railway or planning a gala with the guys on the ground at Ropley? Clearly you are by far the best man for the job so I'll expect an announcement soon that you've taken up the position at Ropley, will it be announced on here first or in your column?

Due to my high expectations though, I am expecting you to manage both roles comfortably and look forward to the Mid Hants receiving the full benefit of your expertise! Anyway, I'm off now to get a new bag of popcorn, sweet not salted.....

I'm glad I never worked with you during all those years. Feel sorry for your work colleagues though who didn't "survive" your quality control.

Whilst work and family committments prevented me visiting Ropley, seen from Alresford the two days went well with "King Alfred Climber" and "Austen Adventurer" runiing Saturday and Sunday, and the "Watercress Wanderer" on Saturday with a demonstration freight on Sunday. All good practice and a chance to see how the public reacted...which seemed to be "enthusiastically!" Staying Safe at Alresford May 23rd.jpg

It does work, but if you look at the stats, effectiveness against it is only 33% after your first dose (compare that to 50% against the variant originally identified in Kent), and as such there is a much greater emphasis on the need for people to have had both their doses. Last I remember we're at something like 70% have had 1 dose and 40% both - there's still quite a way to go, especially if the variant which was first identified in India becomes dominant, there will need to be far more emphasis on people getting both doses. I think 32 and over are now eligible for their first dose, I'll still be waiting a few weeks for my first one, and I'm not expecting to have got my second dose until September. That's still a long time away, and means I'll have to be rather careful over the summer, especially if the variant which was first identified in India becomes dominant in the UK. Based on that the government (and companies) should be mindful and cautious in their approach

After a weekend special event we have: next weekend for 9 days Thomas; 1 week after that there will be War on the Line; 2 weeks after that there is a Diesel w/e, and - as if that isn't enough - The Urie Loco Society Open Day is on 3rd July. It's been a couple of years (thanks to 'The Situation') since the last one, so there is quite a lot of progress with 499 to show off. More details when I have them.
    See you all then?

Is the Urie Locomotive Society Open Day particularly for members, or open to all? As things stand I have a rest day at work that day, so was thinking of heading over.

Of course, that's not to say I wouldn't end up as a member by the end of the day!

I believe it’s open to all. But that might not mean you aren’t a member by the time you leave. The ULS are a good group

Should be a decent show. Thanks to GBRf there will be a couple of class 73s. LUL are lending their 4TC and there is a mystery guest still to announce.

Can the 4TC run in push-pull mode or does it need to be pulled?

The TC can run in push pull mode with 33/1's or ED's.

Open to one and all. As @jwr4472 hinted joining the ULS is encouraged. We don't (contrary to popular belief) hang people upside down and shake out their pockets, but haven't needed to ... ... yet!
    Come and see us.

Nothing on the website regarding the 73's or 4TC. I suppose that will be updated later. Makes being a member on here feel that bit more an exclusive club!

Anyway, tickets booked for the Sunday.

"there is a mystery guest still to announce." 58023? Now that would be a coup! ;)

Can that 4-TC still work with 33/1 or 73? I ask as it won't have needed to with LT.
