Nearly 2000 posts. If the squabbling does not stop soon will there be a WSR??

Some NPers might have grand ideas about themselves, but I honestly don't think any of them equate the number (or content!) of posts on here with the ability or otherwise of the WSR to survive...

I sometimes think that some like to think Nat Pres is the root of all evil, I dread to think what may happen if this thread gets to 10,000 posts....:D

Looking back at WSR news, I see this...

Appointment of Justin Kerr-Peterson as Company Director (west-somerset-railway.co.uk)

    And now this...

Justin James Melville KERR-PETERSON - Personal Appointments (free information from Companies House) (company-information.service.gov.uk)

The news item hints that the GM will not be a board member, so a resignation from the board makes sense if the original role is now confirmed.

Is this what you were referring to?

I'm glad you raised the question because as I mentioned, when I saw the CH information something rang a bell in my mind, but until you asked, I'd not looked further.

Hopefully the appointment will be confirmed by the WSR, and perhaps, with a little more haste than updates on other issues have been...

Maybe part of it is due to the changes in the furlough scheme meaning there is now a cost to GWR to continue the arrangement?

Actually, your post was #37,621. I think you must have meant '2000 pages'

What I find somewhat odd is that the WSR, having recently reported that "...Jonathan Jones-Pratt will remain as Acting General Manager alongside his role as company Chairman...", then goes on to comment "..... many of you will be aware Jonathan runs his own business as well as the volunteer work, he does for the railway, he will provide as much support to the business as possible however due to time commitments a lot of this work has to be done remotely...." Too many hats perhaps ?

I must have missed him being both chairman *and* acting GM, I agree, that does seem like too many hats, and not just for reasons of time either.

    Yes.

The 6 May 2020 news release from the WSR which I linked to a few posts back regarding the appointment says as much in the penultimate and it's preceding paragraph.

Clearly being GM and a board member was not then seen as being a good thing.

the individual who had been appointed as GM but then couldn't start (due to covid) I think is back working with his former employers . Giving the timing I'm guessing would not have covered by furlough .

What this means for him taking up the WSR role in the coming months if at all , I really don't know and have no desire to guess . I am led to believe that an interim appointment has been made

On the crossing question and to try and summarise

the budget and timing was all set for 18/19 . The design worked up by NR (I believe) and all the equipment ordered . Before installation commenced objections were raised by the WSR relating to a non heritage signal approaching Minehead , individuals concerned have been identified on here so I won't repeat. Scheme was the halted ,budget possibly lost . roll forward to March 2020 you may recall on this very forum that as many expected the railway to reopen (pre covid world upside down) it became apparent that the existing crossing at Minehead could no longer be used . were it not for Covid it would be interesting to know what last years operations would have looked like . meanwhile , the crossing equipment has been sat on a shelf its warranty potentially ticking away .To bring us up to date @FrankC is trying to finally get this over the line but still finding traps to throw the timeframe off course .

On a broad note and whilst I believe brickbats if merited should be called out , equally Frank's postings have been appreciated , a little engagement can go a very long way . I'm also conscious the forum can come across as anti WSR . My perception and trying to be objective is it is not against the railway ,nor especially the volunteers , more against the questionable decisions made that stretch back pre the current plc and back into the WSRA and the strife within that

Agreed, he has been dealt the worst possible hand and all credit to him for picking up the mess left behind the cart horse. The end point will be that we will arrive at the same position had the plans been left as they were, but with a huge hole in the revenue column.

The SVR have recently appointed their GM to the PLC Board for the first time since the 1990s. I can't find the quote but I'm sure I remember reading something along the lines of "this was considered to be a good thing by the rail regulators".

The Charter, by RTC on 24th. July, to Minehead still shows, on their web site, that the WSR portion is steam hauled through to Minehead. Maybe nobody has told RTC.

There is the small matter of a year between the end of winter 18/19 and March 2020. Are we to believe that the questioning of the design of signals held the crossing project up for all this time? Why was the work not rescheduled for winter 19/20?
