Or will the Llangollen Railway Trust have enough serviceable coaches if steam trains restart? On Facebook (unofficial page) they seem to say they have 5 coaches in the suburban rake available, one of the steam locos had a steam test and they are getting help with the paperwork needed.

I made it that there were around 17 gangwayed Mk 1s on the LR that looked to be serviceable, 9? of which were offered for sale and some of which were bought back. On that basis they should have around 10 available, so should be able to make up a couple of 4-5-coach trains without resorting to the non-gangwayed vehicles. Only a rough estimate based on info in the carriage survey, though!

I think you’re right yes. We always had 3 rakes of 5, spares and then the subs. We had as many as 8 blood and custard at one point. There is a unrestored tso and 2 / 3 unrestored subs also, therefore options for expanding the operational fleet in time.

In reality 3 rakes were more than was required for the level of service usually operated anyway.

The attached photo of Llangollen station in Jan 1977 shows how far the LR has come in the last 44 years. I believe it shows almost all the rolling stock the railway owned at the time. The Collett BT later went to Steamport then Glos Warks and became increasingly derelict. A great shame as it was very restorable at one time and even had the guard's letter rack intact.

OTOH, you have to allow for scheduled maintenance. With ten carriages, the likelihood is you would never have more than 8 or 9 available simultaneously.

    I would agree definitely.
However, I meant it more in the sense that it was less catastrophic losing several coaches than some other railways, an example off the top of my head the Gwili, who if had lost the same amount of coaches as the LR has would of lost most if not all their operational coaches had they found themselves in the same situation.

Maybe a better way of putting is - LR still has enough coaches with a few spares to operate a similar level of service as before - albeit with no so many spares.

    Well good for you.
I forgot this was National English Language and thought this was a railway forum ;)

Maybe I should really rock the boat and start using text speak Wud u b ok wit dat? :D:D:D

Being serious, I know I’m not the best with punctuation etc, my spelling is actually awful too. It’s not one of my strong points and it doesn’t bother me if pedantic members point out every minor slip.

However, perhaps you should consider that there may be other members of the forum who struggle with the English language or possibly dyslexic, who find the constant corrections put them off posting, meaning we lose their input.

Maybe with the publicity, public sympathy and the full release from lockdown (although some distancing may be needed), visitor numbers may be up needing longer trains.

Then strengthen the gangwayed sets with non-gangwayed coaches?

You obviously never took the York-Aberystwyth mail to get to the Cambrian coast and the Welsh narrow gauge, then. Find a compartment to ourselves, unscrew the light bulbs, shoes off, feet up and head down for the night, only being awakened by the sound of a couple of Manors doing battle with those Welsh hills, ready for a fresh arrival and a day on the narrow gauge.

Perhaps you need to get out a touch more? The vehicles from SECR Trio sets are far better to travel in whilst the Bluebell has an SR ''droplight third'' which is better still. A really lovely vehicle.
One would hope a bogie vehicle from the nineteen fifties would ride better than an 1864 four wheeler. However 6336. on the IOWSR has far superior seating and decoration even in third class.

In any case this discussion was about using Mk.1 stock for glamping.
