Especially Terriers. Phenomenal acceleration for such a small engine.

None whatsoever, it will be 828. The first runs will be for Trust supporters / contributors, after it has been painted.[/QUOTE]

Absolutely and that's the way it should be - they should be very proud of a job well done. It will be another excuse for me to return to the Highlands :)

Just out of interest, does 5025 still bear any battle scars from its mishap at Bletchley in 1939?

I doubt it, but I reckon she's now on her third set of front frames.

As a menagerie of parts cobbled together as shunting/ branch locomotives for the Highland Railway? ;)

I may be totally wrong about this, but somewhere in the distant past I have a vague memory of reading her cab sits down a little out of true as a result of the mishap.

Or are you perhaps confusing this with 5212, whose cab sides were way out of true following an excursion into a turntable pit? Both engines, of course, originally went to Haworth.

Are you saying that locomotives sometimes changed frames while retaining their original identity? Heresy!

An identity swapped about once a month for the first Black Fives if you rely on frames plus a spare frame making 843 in the class.....

In number 6 of the highly detailed LMS Locomotive Profiles ( David Hunt et al ) the authors outline that after problems with the initial Black Fives the frames of locomotives starting 5642 built at Crewe in November 1938 were strengthened to try and prevent cracking. The initial 462 engines ( numbers 5000 to 5461 ) had 1'' frames which was a 1/16'' difference to the later ones with some other alterations in addition. In an effort to cut the time under heavy repair a spare set of frames was constructed to fit these initial 462 engines.

The first exchange of the spare for existing frames was in June 1943 which saw 5226 so fitted. Later that month the frame that had previously been under 5226 went to 5027 and so on.

The authors list the known 268 such frame swaps up to January 1958 which they were able to trace. These were all done at Crewe works apart from 3 in 1952 at St Rollox.

Crewe Works made a spare set of frames for the Stanier Class 5s in the number rage 5000-5461. When a loco with problem frames came in, the spare set was used and the errant frames were repaired and used on the next one. There is a list of frame changes that took place between 1943 and 1958 in the Wild Swan book LMS Locomotive Profiles Volume 6 Class 5s 5225-5499.
Just looking through the list, 5025 received the frames from 5362 in July 1946 and the frames from 5079 in Jan 1950

You may have missed the sarcasm ;) (It's a topic well aired on the forum in the past ...)

There's an interesting comment from KJ Cook to the effect that he did not consider the provision of spare frames for LMS locomotives as "playing cricket" with regard good statistics on repair times - though I guess it was justified in achieving higher availability during the war.

I'm pretty sure that was 5212, it shunted a signalbox in the Preston area late in its life, the skewed cab only being corrected when Pete Best overhauled it the last but one time.
When I get chance I'll have a look in "Chapters of Steam" by John Sagar.
