Funny enough I was thinking about the same story earlier today after reading the above posts.

Dragging this back to the WSR....Chris vda used to always offer the excuse "frozen points at Clapham Jct" for any delays on the WSR...

I recall something similar to you, with the reason given - from memory - that the current GM has safety responsibility and ORR considered that the person responsible for safety should be on the board.

While on the subject, twice on the SVR it found itself rather suddenly without a GM in role but handled it differently each time. On the first occasion Alun Rees was appointed acting GM with his appointment made permanent the following year. Several years later an executive committee of three was in charge for a year until the new GM started.

Was the line ever a red route ? Authenticity at any cost and all that.

Red route engines have been allowed as a dispensation (e.g. 4472) but I am happy to be corrected.

Only ever in preservation, but it was more than special dispensation, Halls are red route for example.

And of course, we say red route as shorthand, but under that system it's probably more accurate to say dotted red as we don't go very fast, which makes a difference!

When the line was British Rail and up to some time after 1990 it was red route to Bishops Lydeard and from there to Minehead 17 ton 12 cwt.

Without allegedly offering to have ‘a roll around on the platform?’ With someone of a different opinion?

Going back to the questions about the winter works, I have no wish to denigrate the hardworking members of the WSR PWay staff and volunteers I look at what has been done at it seems to me to be relatively trivial work: rail replacement, spot resleepering, topping up of ballast shoulders, and this on a railway that doesn't seem have had any major relays in its preservation existence. I hope I will be forgiven for calling this and the other effort that has gone on as relatively trivial, but surely they should be completely replacing a substantial length of track each year?

Is it possible to put a figure on how much relaying has been carried out over the years? If there has been so much relaying over the years, then wh the problems with rourte being downgraded - is it for specific areas oir a general issue?

Has anyone considered a temporary platform on the Dunster side of the crossing perhaps?

An update on with the weeding would be welcomed - last years hand weeding, whilst laudable, could not have covered the lines length..

A ‘weed killing train’ was employed in early May.

Several pictures were posted on Steve Edge’s website at the time.
