I think that will change as the magazine finds its feet. I saw a friend's copy today and will be seeking out my own, there's a lot to read, which in my book is nice. I like to sit down and delve into soemthing rather than spend over 4 quid on a mag and have read it in less than an hour. This is the thinknig preservationists magazine. Jim Rees is well worth a read anyday

I'll pick up Trackside to see what it's like. My Grandad usually does my Steam Railway subscription as a Christmas gift, as he is a subscriber too. Personally I've always enjoyed Steam Railway as a publication down the years despite its 'Steam Beano' tag. Although it must be said the contents seem to focus online subject quite a lot recently (although I can understand to an extent given the events of the last year and a bit that more content might be hard to find). That being said I'm still waiting for their intended follow up to the feature on the Bluebell that they did for the lines 60th Anniversary.

As for Heritage Railway, I stopped buying it regularly about 3/4 years ago, as I got a bit fed up with the padding out of some of its articles a bit too much (articles being made up of an mostly of an almost entire working history of a loco returning to steam, and then repeating the same information a few issues later when it fully entered service). At least that's what it felt like to me anyway.

Tried to pickup a copy in my local WHS Friday in Bury, no sign, is that good or bad news?
As a side issue, Chris Milner is standing down according to latest issue of Railway Mag. Watch this space?

No problem; Chris is approaching the retirement age at which Mortons have a policy of compulsory retirement; by cutting back now in preparation for retirement he maintains his contact with RM but also more time to do things for himself that work has prevented him from doing - one of the privileges of retirement

I thought compulsory retirement was illegal these days Fred.

Which may be why he will remain as consulting contributor in order for him being able to continue "employment". I'm not sure of the mechanics but I have heard of other Morton's staff being re-assigned once they reach retirement age.

Finally received my copy of Trackside today. Well produced and well-written, but I agree with the previous poster who suggested it was a bit loco-heavy. There’s more to railways than locomotives....how about a walk the line/what’s left of the (insert interesting line here) railway feature? Or better still, a regular column from the Railway Heritage Trust updating on their multiple projects? The RHT Twitter is excellent but I miss the glossy annual report- a column could bridge that gap. Tim Dunn’s recent TV series showed there is considerable interest in railway architecture - how about articles about lesser known gems?

I've found Steam Railway to have a similar bias towards locomotives over anything else at times.

I subscribe to the RM and as the pandemic has kept me generally away from browsing the shelves at WH Smith I hadn't kept up to date with how other magazines were doing. A rare trip last week led to me glance through, and I really liked the look of Trackside. Steam Railway looked like it needed a bit of a refresh.

Have given up trying to get a copy. After several promises from Nick (Broderick I presume) of letting me know where it is for sale in N.Ireland, I can't be bothered to chase them any more to give them my money. You would have thought it would be fairly easy to find the list of places/distributors that you've sold your magazine to!

Were the locos a smidgen too large for you as well?!

Do you have anything positive to say about it, rather than just criticise?

Indeed I've been keeping an eye out for a copy. But haven't seen hid nor hair of it. Which is understandable in the smaller independent newsagents, but not quite as understandable for the larger city centre national 'agents i.e. W.H. Smith, like the main branch on Northumberland Street in Newcastle....

Well to be honest, after the indifferent reviews on here, I would have liked to take a quick flick through it before deciding whether to buy it.

Whuch id a shame, as I personally think it shows much promise, and will ctake in more subjects as it finds its feet having been in tocuh with the editor. Why not write for them?

Because our Hayling Island Correspondent would run out of articles after about 3 issues! ‘BR Mk1’s why I don’t like them’ followed by ‘Why anything above a 0P classification is Big Chufferitus’ and finally ‘Every railway the other side of the Solent has been getting it wrong for the past 50 years’ :);)

Still be an interesting read - I think the editorial team would be up for anything challenging or tohught provoking. Easy to throw stones, much more worthwhile to put pen to parper, or even fingers to keyboard now

There is one positive - at least the new magazine's readers will be spared this on their Readers' Letters page.

Alas, the the ''foamers'' appear to be be foaming again!

If the first edition proves typical, it will offer little if any more about ''heritage '' than Railway Magazine without the latter's coverage of the modem system.

With so much musical chairs going on in editorial staffs at present it will be intriguing to see how they end up.
