Not directly Mid-Hants related, but hopefully someone who watches this thread will know the answer to my question.

At the old Winchester junction, the Mid-Hants joined the main line and the DNS ran under it. Living in Kings Worthy, I frequently walk along both former track beds. But south-east of the main line the DNS embankment has disappeared, and there is a dip in the field. I have photos of what it looked like, and there is also a youtube video that shows the spot. Which got me thinking. I can't believe that the farmer removed the embankment as it would be a massive effort. Was it removed to when the A34 was built?

    Any ideas?

Down here, I always knew my GP's surgery and Hangleton library were built on the course of the old Devil's Dyke branch, but couldn't for the life of me work out the exact nature of the formation (as what's there now would suggest gradients of 1:20!). It transpires that a long chalk embankment and an associated narrow underbridge were wiped from the landscape in toto, during the 1950s development of the suburb. No small task.

On the other side of the city, the top of the old embankment leading to the (now demolished) Lewes Road viaduct is occupied by commercial units and the land formerly adjacent to and beneath the viaduct forms the dreaded Lewes Road Gyratory System, well known for all the wrong reasons!

    Embankment or cutting?
Looking at the Google aerial view the route to the south of Winchester Junction was subsumed into the A34, then some industrial units and, in the Winnal, has student accommodation built on it. An astute farmer could have offered his land as a tip for surplus soil during the road works. Not saying that this happened, but its been known, I think.

I recall that the line south west of Alresford quickly had landowners filling in the cuttings to re-unite their land on either side of the railway and, of course, make it difficult for the line to be restored as was the rumour at the time.

Got this from google. The line ran on an embankment across the field from the main line underbridge (top left) to where the house is at the bottom. Its now quite a dip.

D7612 has landed at Alresford this evening and the LT 4TC has moved to Eastleigh for some repairs before moving to the MHR next week.

All shaping up to be a good gala next week, just need the weather to play ball now!

I was going to wait until next week to post this, but here goes anyway:
I am guessing that the cab rides are unlikely, now that we are still restricted.
Anyway, come along and see us.

I think you mean this morning or last night? The loco is safely parked in Ropley now. Granted the lowloader is still here. It has a couple of jobs to do tomorrow.

Yes this didn't post last night even though I added - I took it at about 7 pm yesterday - edited to reflect that just now and re-posted but that didn't work either. My e-mail isn't currently working to boot! Technology eh!

@City of truro fan , would have us believe that the MHR is building a southerly extensions over the line towards Winchester. There are earlier posts where he claims to have identified work on the old track bed. This new post claims tracklaying has taken place. Make of it what you will.

Ah I think he may mean the fact that Perins School may be going to allow the MHR to install a turntable and carriage shed in the corner of their school field? :Saywhat:

A subsequent post at least told us where this loco was arriving, but can we also please be told where it has come from, why it has come, and how long it is staying?
