    BENTON II Loco is AB 1290/12 at Burt, Bolton & Haywood, Eling Wharf, Totton. Scrapped 7/66. They had a previous Benton, hence its replacement was No2. No doubt the tanks are creosote for their sleeper business. (Thanks to John Scholes for info)

    A little bit more information, although not directly about these pictures. The tank cars conveyed bitumen for South Western Tar Distillers who ran an old fashioned and rather basic ashphalt coating plant until the late 1970's. They were a separate business to BB&H who ran a sawmill and creosoting plant.
    The book A further look at Southampton's Quayside Railways by Dave Marden says that the bitumen traffic finished in 1975. I think it may have continued for a couple more years. I remember that it caused problems detaching an odd tank car or two from the Eastleigh yard to Fawley afternoon freight and shunting it back onto the tramway or collecting it. It had to be the afternoon train as the Totton ARC stone train was on the tramway from about 0700 until 1130 every weekday morning.
    By the 1970's they were Esso registered tank cars conveying traffic to Totton Tramway, but not all of the loaded cars originated at Fawley. A memory of Kingsnorth or Grain seem to stick in my mind. { Athelney - any ideas?}
    After 1966 any shunting was done by one of the BB&H steam cranes.

    Cheers, Neil
