There were train ferries from Harwich to Zeebrugge (1924) and Dover to Dunkerque (1936). The ferry fans were used to transport goods without the need for transhipment. For example Transfesa ferry Van's used to bring perishable goods to the UK from Spain. These had their wheel sets changed at the Spanish border and crossed the Channel on the ferry to Dover. They were taken to a distribution depot at Padock Wood to be unloaded.

I remember watching the ferry trains passing by the bottom of my mum's garden when she lived in Beckenham. The extra lugs are securing points to strap the vans down on the ferry.

Simon, any chance you could say what the railway is going to use these vans for? Are we looking at mobile storage containers or is there another use for them.

    Thanks

Possible museum display vehicles? , as such they would be ideal for displaying some items, and telling the story of the LSWR, S&D
displaying an collection of artifacts in , they could be shunted into the cattle dock, so accessable to be viewed from there, until the platform extension can be built.

They are 2 of the only 4 Ferry Scenery Vans. Originally numbered GB 889200 to 889203 (Diagram C5187). Renumbered to 21 70 2397 000-7 to 003-1 (TOPS design code VIE412). If any of these numberings survive (a miracle?) I would like to know. I might pop in to Alresford tomorrow morning before going to Ropley, if they are still accessible.

One could be converted to a water tank for future Main Line use behind 34007? They look very similar to the GUV vehicle used by Tyseley on the Main Line as shown below (not my picture). Very interested to see what they will be used for. 4526441858_7e080ffb01_b.jpg

Is a mainline ticket for 34007 being planned? Also if they are two of only 4 vehicles of their type left, I'm not sure they'd be the most obvious or popular candidate for conversion to an extra tender...

Short term, they would be ideal vehicles to form part of an S&D museum display, to exhibit some of the smaller relics of the S&D that the trust holds, being mobile, they could be shunted into the cattle dock on running days, then places in the siding when the siding is needed, once the platform extension is done, and there is room to move them into that road, one can be on display, externally restored as a museum car, the other can be an mobile generator for the train of lights, or an mobile generator for works trains where needed,

Hopefully the Main Line will be an option in the future. 34007 has been stripped down at Ropley for a detailed inspection to take place in preparation for the overhaul to ML condition to commence. A very large donation from an enthusiast has enabled the loco to jump up the overhaul queue.
