35018 arrived at Salisbury about 6 mins down, having been about 10 down at one point. Loco is running without a headboard as well.

5L through Tisbury Loop. Appeared to be checked for some reason, but sounded great accelerating away to Gillingham.

Any idea what's caused today's bout of late running?

Shunting at Weymouth and the knock on effect of late running (out of path).

The loco seemed to lose and make up time quite a few times on the run down to Yeovil Junction, as the loco was able to cut time from the water stop at Salisbury and arrived at Yeovil a minute early, having been running late at Sherborne.

Was good to see 35018 running for the first time, and visiting Yeovil Railway Centre for the first time since 1999 (ironically with a charter by another Merchant in 35028).

Thanks to everyone for bothering to go out and capture a MN on its old stamping group 54 years on from the end of steam. Despite it having a minder all of the time there's no getting away from the fact that anyone around when they were everywhere just wouldn't have even dreamed that it's a sight they could still see as they get nearer to their dotage than their youth.

Funnily enough, Al, I was saying exactly the same to the chap I met on Overton Rd bridge nr Micheldever yesterday evening - and I only just remember the last summer of steam to Bournemouth. There will be some video from me later, possibly during that football match tomorrow ;-)

LE loco was 15 late into Weymouth. Lest Yeovil Junction on time but lost 10 minutes waiting for a late running GWR service from Weymouth to arrive. So they actually made up 5 minutes with all the Jersey Sidings moves. IMG_6697.JPG IMG_6712.JPG
Seen passing Upwey. Apart from the modern light could have almost just be returning having banked a boat train out of Weymouth to Dorchester.
And approaching the tunnel with some serious rear end assistance from the sound.

For those trains which employed a pilot locomotive out of Weymouth in the 1960s, where was the pilot normally detached?

All up trains from Weymouth going towards Poole and beyond had to reverse into the up platform (original LSWR terminus) at Dorchester South.
54 years ago the 1411 Weymouth to Waterloo which I rode from Weymouth to Southampton was double headed out of Weymouth by D6532 and 35030 Elder Dempster Lines, the 33 was detached at Dorch Sth returning to Weymouth before the steam left.

Thanks for that. In 1966 I photographed a double-headed combination including a Standard Class 4 which was a pilot to a MN on a London bound train at Weymouth station which I travelled on, and wondered where the pilot would come off after the Upway climb.

Saturday 28th August 1965. 09:25 Weymouth to Waterloo 13:10. Load 11 out of Weymouth.
Motive power - 35014 + 35029. We blasted up to Dorchester South where MN14 was detached and MN29 continued to Waterloo.

That's a bit like Formula one super power. My visit there was a little bit later than yours, 11th September 1966. It was a late afternoon train with 76026 & 35027 Port Line.
    All good stuff.

My take on yesterdays End of Southern Steam run, captured at Barnes, speeding and whistling through Andover, climbing up Templecombe, getting turned at Yeovil Railway Centre, followed by the climb up Upwey bank, and finally at Winchester:
