I knew what I meant! ;) Please cut me some slack I’m bloody knackered after a 6 day week of 8 hour shifts and a 12 hour shift and 2 2/3rds of DIPA yesterday! :) I’m also being used as a climbing frame by 2 felines! I’m not my usual self! :);)

I'm still a bit puzzled by this discussion in the "Steam Traction" section........and the boiler did not help the traction!

That's a good term, and a useful category; so 84030 would be a 'conversion'; as would 2999 ' Lady of Legend'.
If the parts came from a number of different originals (no matter when taken apart, IMO), and most of the 'new' loco is comprised of such parts, than I think that's a good classification. Do any such exist? [I'm not sure e.g. 4709 could be so described, as in addition to old parts, it has several new major components, so it's a bit of a 'mongrel'! :-]

Whilst understandable Phil. The heading doesn't actually specify steam, diesel, petrol or any other type of motive power........

But it is in a discussion in the Steam Traction section.

And 36 pistons in a 'big' Deltic engine with 72 of them in the whole loco. As for the number of piston rings............ Early morning, I know the feeling!

I was going to get round to that :)
In all seriousness I really want to see 5910 and 10000 succeed.
There’s going to be a cracking gala at some point with all these new builds , steam or diesel let me know the date because I want my ticket!:)

    Shouldn't it be 10002?

Can we move the Diesel/Electric new builds or reconstructions to their own postings page in the Diesel and Electric Traction section? Not much to ask for.

What about locos that were withdrawn for scrapping and partly stripped but with many parts surviving? If you use some parts from withdrawn loco A, plus some from withdrawn loco B, plus some new parts, how do you classify that?

Hardly the same things as using or taking substantial parts from one loco to make a new one, is it? Using second hand parts to maintain an existing engine is only the same as the Works did during normal overhauls in BR days.

What do you classify the GWR Dukedogs as? One new type built from parts of two previous different types.

Though to many 9017 was the most popular ever visitor to the SVR.

We're still looking at different scenarios. The pre-Grouping railways would use components from obsolescent types to produce a new (Dukedogs excepted) CLASS of engines to perform normal, day-to-day work, not to reproduce an example of a long scrapped class for sentimental reasons. It was an early form of recycling; that doesn't apply when one piece of history is broken up to produce a different piece of history.
