I'll be kind because it was going downhill at the time...

A look at the sun calculator gave me enough motivation for a trip over to Shrewsbury station for the evening departure. What it doesn't tell you is the effect of surrounding buildings.

45231 among the forest of GW ironmongery at Crewe Junction, despite some sound chuffs there was little coming out of the chimney.

Yeah, I got nobbled by tree shadows! Lol

My recollection had been open line with nothing to block the low sun - and it would have been in the morning with sun shining from the other side.
Not to worry, there were two patches of light shining through that a long lens could take advantage of.
...oh, and I arrived at the second location just as the train came into view and hummed past as I climbed out of the car - rats!

At the time I wasn't even sure the fire was alight, but looking at the photo I can see a heat haze from the chimney - and going downhill the diesel wasn't doing much either. Beyond Hadnall there wasn't a sound coming from the steamer - seemed to just be there for looks. Still, on the bright side they'll have saved a tidy penny on unburnt coal :)

Thanks, very nice shot at one of NRs two midlands GW signalling museums!
There's another great shot within this one! Cropping out the shadows and the gantry to concentrate on the Black 5, the goods shed and the 3 more distant signals.
With your camera there will be plenty of pixels and colour depth to produce another great shot!

Indeed there is. What I posted above was the original idea processed after getting home after 10:30 ( a tale in itself )
True the Nikon D800 at 36Mp does give lots of scope for further cropping which is why I have it, though at 7 years old I do wonder if it's time to upgrade - to what is the quandry 45Mp D850, already old tech, or mirrorless Z7II with a lens mount adaptor.
Anyway - just a quick edit

Not sure about saving on coal that tender looks a lot emptier than it did in the morning and the Five certainly worked out of the station, the 47 wasn't contributing at the time.
As for the tree growth you have my sympathy, I went to Mostyn on Tuesday evening to get the Scot passing the box which looks like it's had some tlc - not a chance the Buddleia is so thick you can't see through it, and it's the same everywhere.

Classic 1960's shot. Steam up front for heating because the boiler on the diesel has failed! ;)

I've just done the change from my 4 year old Canon 6D II and 'L' series lenses at 25MP across to Sony A7RIV mirrorless at 61MP with significantly better low light performance. Financially it is a little painful jumping systems, but I can trade in the Canon and recoup some of that cost. For some things the mirrorless EVF is nice, in other instances I miss a direct optical view.

I understand they didn't top up coal at Bridgnorth. Don't know if it was supposed to, but I believe it isn't unusual for main line charters that work through to B'North to recoal there.

I popped out to see the pair of 37s working the train of continuous rail being taken down the Cambrian on Sunday night. Whilst waiting for the 20 minutes or so before arrival I watched the shadows rapidly move from out of the way to right across the line :( . Fortunately I had time to quickly hop down the line to an infinitely better location with no annoying trees to get a far nicer shot with clear evening sun :) ...summer's always a bit of a pain with vegetation.

When it was just supposed to be working by itself, it was to take coal at Bridgnorth. But that was removed after the change to being with the 47.

Ha, I definitely need a new cap. It's positively grey in that shot.

Apparently the power car was involved in an incident with a MK2 Carriage being moved by a Class 47. Pictures now appearing on the web:

Way way outside my comfort zone, but that definitely isn't a class 47.

I think he was referring to the shunt move in Crewe being performed by a 47, rather than the green 37 in the photo

Sorry for the confusion. The picture shows the power car being taken off for repairs by a Class 37.
