Yes, but what have they got to do with COMEMORATIVE PLAQUES ?

Are you getting confused with nameplates?

Erm...how are the crests on Blackmore Vale and Spitfire fitted to the 'boiler barrel'? The air smoothed casing maybe...

Nameplates/Commemorative Plaques surely is the same thing? Alot of locos have worn plaques in the centre of the boiler barrel and not on the smoke deflectors? For example you have a bulleid with a commemorative plaque/nameplate and then the Golden Arrow symbol on the smoke deflector? now doesn't something like that look fab?

Although I must admit the LNER region did place these on the smoke deflectors so you're point taken there.... Just saying what looks nicer! Personal preference i'm afraid Sheff....

Afraid they aren't attached to the boiler barrel either, the nameplate and crest on these are mounted on a bracket attached to the running plate... :smt002

Anyhow, going back to Tornado (lest I be accused of being Captain Tangent), I actually think they look quite good, and as has been said could go some way to reminding the notoriously ignorant Joe Public of the significance of the loco. I really don't think they're that obtrusive in the grand scheme of things.

I'm steering clear of this argument because I'm not picky on what things look like and where things should/shouldn't be but..

34007, do you mean Merchant Navy's when you talk about plates being attached to the middle of a boiler barrel?

I'm sorry, but does it really matter where other loco classes put similar plates? The A1SLT guys have put the plaque beneath the nameplate, a common sense place to put it to commemorate a significant event in the loco's life. It doesn't look that obtrusive, it doesn't look that out of place, and it is yet another way of marking the loco out as something special to Joe Public.

Well done to the A1SLT for having the idea to mark the occasion beyond a tatty old set of curtains and bottle of cheap fizz to smash over the bufferbeam.

[eggshells] I still don't get why people argue and demand a loco to be in a certain colour with whatever bit going in a certain place.. Shouldn't we all be glad that the bloody things run? [/eggshells]

A map and a quick Fotopic search would have soon given you the answer but, yes, you have the correct route!

Erm, as someone posted earlier - neither rebuilt WCs nor BBs had their nameplates fitted to the boiler barrel. They were fitted to a bracket mounted on the running plate.

I had deduced the above from what pics and vids are out there, and was just looking for confirmation to double check.

    (a) I think most people have just been expressing a personal opinion. Quite some way from criticism

    (b) Nice. What's a "rivet counter"?
