I read how when Gateshead dispensed with it's tram system in 1951, a number of the trams were bought by BR (Eastern Region) for use on the Grimsby - Immingham line until 1961. They were painted green and had the BR emblem added to their sides but retained their original numbers. Two made it to preservation; number 10 at Beamish and 5 at Crich.

Just an idle thought; did many enthusiasts head to Humberside to cop these rarities?

I did on October 31st, 1959 to not only phot the trams but also for the K2 2-6-0s which were found to be in store at Immingham, although I did manage to get one in steam at Frodingham (Scunthorpe). Here, an ex Gateshead tram as Grimsby - Immingham tramway No. 30.
