I did say about the distances between signals might be a factor but dont let that stop you having a go..

We have had a reasonable explanation of why the signal was red (simply catching up the train in front), but we still don't know why the train stopped suddenly. It apparently wasn't anything requiring a long conversation between the driver and the signaller, which rules out some scenarios.

The train wasn't "held at Totnes for approximately 20 minutes" though. We were stationery for less than a minute before moving again.

Plenty of time therefore to send the BTP to the scene...although "thrown a red", as described from the footplate, is probably exactly what happened.

I think I am going to start reading 'Alice in Wonderland' , because its got more relevance than some of the posts on here. I really love it (NOT) , when the armchair experts dissect what I may have done, or not done, without any knowledge of facts. I know what happened, I know why it happened, and I am trying to take steps to prevent it happening again. If I seemed pxxxed off at Plymouth, I was ! In regards to the comments about handling of the loco, I can assure everybody that it was a team effort to get restarted, and keep moving. Chris B, and the support crew rep, both played important parts, and many thanks to them. Being a relatively young hand, with only 47 years experience, I have never seen anybody 'throwing a red' . If you mean that the signal was put back in front of us, it wasn't. The signaling system worked as it should.

I think we can conclude that the Railway Herald has just added to all the confusion over what we saw on video.

But one thing is for certain - and this has been said many times from the 'armchairs' - that the restart and subsequent climb was something else. Obviously not what any crew would like to do unless necessary but definitely something to be applauded.
    So well done to all.

The sudden stop at the bottom of a climb was very surprising and very unfortunate, giving the crew a much harder job than they could reasonably have expected. All the speculation here was because the reason was unclear, and some of the information that was available was conflicting. We would love to know what actually happened and why.

You might but I wouldn't. @The Man said more than you could reasonably expect a professional to say in public.

    Give it a rest.

Consider it a small blip during the day, no more than that.

I'll remember the day for many years to come after seeing the train at Stoneycombe on the outward and Hemerdon on the return.

    It was simply amazing. <BJ>

News that Leander is heading south is nice to hear for the next two Royal Duchy trips.

No sign of a Jubilee to Plymouth in history and then two come along in one season. ;) <BJ>

Leander on the front, but LE path to Plymouth for the diesel looks like it's cancelled.
Nasty feeling it's going on the back :-(

Update: 47 has failed. Train to be terminated at Plymouth.
Replacement diesel dispatched from Southall to pick up the return working from Taunton.
