Where will 60007 S.N.G. be overhauled in the meantime after its 10 year ticket starts ticking down at Jeremy Hoskins L.S.L. depot at crewe? and in between mainline tours for servicing, will it still visit the N.Y.M.R. for galas and special event days, and will R.T.C. still be able to hire 60007 on mainline tour rosters?

That said, I do think Apple Green suits the A4, and I for one have never seen one in Apple Green. I must admit I even got tired of seeing 4498 in LNER Garter Blue by the mid-'80s...

Yes, but what's the need? Which is most important? A Railway-related workshop, or a Disneyland kids' playground? The whole ethos of a Railway Museum is being lost in history by management who have little sympathetic understanding of what our rich Railway history and heritage is all about. John Coiley and Andrew Dow would be turning in their graves if they could see it now.

Would the new workshops at N.R.M. Still have the wheel drops from the one that's going to be converted kids play ground, and thus how would the money be raised to build the new facility? Also besides dreaming of 4471 green arrow or the J52 or 60022 Mallard been overhauled (probably will never happen) and would any locos off the top of my head be overhauled there? Such as the N.E.L.P.G. loco,s and tankys preserved that either get overhauled at the N.Y.M.R. or up in darlington. And the Adam's 563 T3 the only disposed loco been overhauled at the flour mill and needed a crowd funding appeal so it can eventually run on the S.R. oh yes and not forgetting 63601 O4 been restored at G.C.R.

De gustibus non est disputandum; which is why there is no point to these discussions.

And since when has that ever stopped the eternal livery debate? ;) In any event, "He who pays the piper...." and all that.

In the case of the wartime black, whilst modern renderings may produce an aethetically pleasing (to some) effect, I can't help but recall several contemporaneous accounts of the gloop in question employed the word "tar" and at least it only lasted - give or take - "for the duration".

In an era when there is a general desire for museum exhibits to show some "life" it seems to me to be a crying shame that the workshops are going to be lost, along with the ability to demonstrate some common operations such as straightforward turning of components such as the making of boiler stays or even Whitworth nuts and bolts. It could be a self-financing service with the products offered to preservation groups at cost. Clearly, protective measures such as screens would need to be put in place for the audience but I think they manage to do so for the foundry at Blists Hill so it is clearly not impossible.

Heavy engineering is admittedly fraught with danger, but carpentry is far less so. Quite a few years ago now I had some discussions with the NRM regarding the possibility of restoring a Gresley carriage at the NRM, the attraction to them being that a. the carriage would be done virtually on the site where it (or similar types) were originally built, perpetuating the York carriage building tradition and b. it would be safe and interesting for visitors to get reasonably close to whilst work was in progress - the proposed location was in a temporary building then used for storage in the South Yard. After some initial interest the then senior management rejected the proposal on the grounds that they had "other plans" for that are - plans that afaik have never materialised.

The story of the NRM in recent years seems to me that most of the senior staff with a serious interest in railways have become disillusioned and have left, being replaced by more commercially minded people and with it the soul of the museum has gradually shrunk. Perhaps it is just symptomatic of the fact that everyone has grown older and fewer and fewer people understand why railways of the steam era were so fascinating to enthusiasts by comparison with today's homogenised and dull system.

In terms of "no risk" look up Teak disease - carpentry dust can be pretty nasty.

Whilst Blists Hill did do pouring, on my last visit 2018(?) they weren't as the person who ran it had retired.

Still it could be worse, there could be "interpreters" (aka actors hamming it up...)

The proposed project never got as far as detailed H & S measures such as dust extraction, but it wasn't intended that there would be any wood-machining carried out on site - and hand saw, mallet and chisel produce very little dust!

Whilst the froth about colour, as the finish line approaches, is expected, the people who support her, and pay the £££'s, voted for Express Blue, and as such should be respected.

The last update mentioned the tender was already in a light blue undercoat, and as much as i agree a black would be interesting, would suggest that boat has sailed.

Quite agree guy. Which in turn reminds me of an incident at the "Great Goodbye" back in 2014 [I know it's 7 years ago!]. When they had all 6 A4s at Locomotion at Shildon. This woman turned to her son and said.- ".....and Mallard is the Blue one........" bear in mind that 4 of the 6 were blue:Resistanceisfutile::Saywhat:!

Perhaps I am biased (given I spend my working hours looking after that "homogenised and dull system") but the view from my office in Stratford every day I am in shows me a variety of electric multiple units, two versions of electrification, one railway running ATO, intermodal freight trains pulled by a variety of diesel and electric traction coming and going, and the odd steam special routed through there...

In short, I think the modern railway is much the same, it has just evolved over time to throw up new challenges, ideas and technologies.

Didn’t Mr Ward throw his toys out the pram a few years ago in one mag about its livery?
Personally I rather like Elvis in BR Blue, since it was repainted in 1995 it’s given it a rather unique identity.
It’s going to look the mutts when paired up with a rake of blood and custard from Saphos.
Something to get excited about in the future :)

    Long story but here goes.
When I was a small child in the 1980’s my Dads friend made a recording of 4498 on a Welsh Marches Express from the lineside at Church Stretton, he then played it back at a very high volume in a nearby pub, when the Landlord told him to turn ‘that bloody racket’ off his reply was along the lines of ‘do you know anything about music? This is a classic by Sir Elvis Gresley’ so ever since then between Dad and I and a few of my dads mates 4498/60007 has always been referred to as Elvis.
    It’s silly I know.
