5521/L150/60, is not running this weekend.
But its staying with us till 3rd October, subject to the usual caveats.
So plenty more chances to see and ride behind it.

To answer a few questions, the font isn't correct, the spacing probably is not right either. The colour of the loco is probably correct, as is the letters.

Its all abit of fun and publicity, just as the owner intended.

Why 60, when the highest MSWJ loco number was 31?

I'm guessing because it's 60th anniversary of the closure of the M&SW.

Yes, 60th anniversary of the line closing, 140 years since it opened.
    140 on the buffer beams.

Have just read above so few days late ! Apologies, I had a senior moment, that below
has nothing to do with the R&SB ! It is meant as a sign of approval to 60 (5521)s
    livery.

Colin Maggs book on the M&SWJct 1967 edition has a coloured frontispiece ( also the dust cover ) of one of the
    4-4-4 tanks passing Stocksbridge. The livery appears to be the same as 60 (5521 }

Maggs states (p.136 ) “The SMA engines were painted red and had the company’s initials and the number
painted on the tank sides.” and “the number plates of the 2-4-0s, 4-4-0s and later 0-6-0Ts were polished brass with
raised numbers on a vermillion ground” “The lettering on the tender or tanksides was gold, shaded with blue.
Lettering was ‘M.& S.W.J.Ry’ and later ‘M.S.W.J.R’ ( or Rly). The 4-40s had red wheels, and those coming out in
1914 had the company’s initials on the tender in gilt script instead of block lettering; this was adopted as
standard.” “Goods engines were painted in olive green” and “during the war many engines were painted
    unlined black”.

From the two vol Wild Swan books
Barnsley Vol 2 locomotives says “ At some point after the company had changed its title to Midland and
South WesternJunction Railway in 1894, and certainly by 1896, the basic body colour was changed to
crimson lake, using Midland Railway paints.” and later that “Midland red livery, was actually
specified for theSharp Stewart 4-4-4Ts “

Section 17 p.143-54 gives a somewhat confused ( I think because it was confusing ) account of liveries.

Barnsley includes details of L&SW engine loans from the end of the 19th century onwards
and a reference to a GWR loan in 1898 plus details wrt GWR locos loaned during the war, which although
in some cases lasting three or four years retained their GWR identity.

    From "The Locomotive" Oct 1896:

The Engines of the Midland and South-Western Joint Railway are painted a dark red with black bands, having yellow lines on either side. The buffer beams are vermilion, with black edge and white line, but the frames and wheels are all dark red, with black stripes and yellow lines. The cabs inside are painted a light yellow brown, and the number plates are polished brass, with a vermilion ground. The lettering on the tender sides is in gold, with blue shading.

P.S. Just got the DVD of 1896 to 1923. Thank you Great Eastern Society.

5521 has arrived at North Weald ahead of Epping Ongar Railway's London Transport Weekend.

Unfortunately the only image I've seen so far is on an individual's Facebook profile page, so I won't post a link to it.
