    Waverley BIL 2b.jpg

Typical S+C weather today as SRMN class No. 35018 'British India Line' works 'The Waverley' passed Quarry Farm with David Blair driving, Clive Gault on the shovel and Mike McPeake Guard

    Waverley BIL 3b.jpg

Overcast conditions as 'British India Line' makes a wonderful noise as it works the return 'Waverley' towards Aisgill summit with Mick Kelly driving, Bob Bullock on the shovel and Roly Parker Guard

    Quality run today.
BIL seemed in fine form, and will be interesting to see the reports from the timers onboard. We certainly didn't hang around.

    Ribblehead looked packed.

It was good to see that Bob Bullock was the fireman on the return leg (and not forgetting Clive Gault on the outbound) - thanks Shep. BIL showed her complete mastery of the northern fells with 12 coaches in tow; 37/8 mph approaching Helwith Bridge had risen to 44/5 mph by the quarry junction. On the return 43 mph running up towards Birkett Tunnel. (My thanks to Steve and Nige for the use of their videos)

Here I go again with my usual knack of being late to the party, but BIL and crews provided some real entertainment on the Sunday just gone.

Settle Jn-Blea Moor Box: 21mins 26secs, with a really aggressive attack on the lower slopes of the ‘Drag’, before the weather closed in and the effort was reduced.

Carlisle-Appleby: 48:01, which included a 24sec stop inside Culgaith Tunnel.

Appleby-Ais Gill: 24:08 (18:59 Blue Riband Time). 57.5 being recorded at Ormside and a final minimum of 42.5 at Milepost 260.

But the real highlight of this ‘Waverley’ was a rare high speed flight through the Aire Valley in between passenger drop offs. We had total freedom of the line right from Skipton and passed a freight looped at Kirkstall, well into the mid 70s. Also the requirement to drive hard between Leeds and York was not lost on Mick Kelly.

It seems as though WC is now taking full advantage of what many down south have known for some time about the Class. It's good to read that the loco is at home in the Fells.

May i politely ask why you always put the names of the driver and fireman after your photos, and how do you know? Just curious! Incidentally, I think Bob used to be a fireman at 15B, until the depot closed in 1965. He is pictured in a couple of the excellent Northamptonshire books.

I like to acknowlege the crews names for the work they do providing the opportunity to photograph steam, no crews no photograph

Tell you what, you take my place in the BBLS shop and I'll take your place on the lineside as I've yet to see 60103 over the S&C.
