The times for this trip are now up:

For once there are some good point to point times for this trip with Clan Line especially on the Woking to Salisbury section in each direction.

It's nice to see such a fitting tribute to someone who did much for the steam charter (and wider rail tour) movement over the years.

John Farrow Salute. WOK to SAL Tunnel Junction signal stop. 58 miles in 56 min 16 sec including a 20 mph restriction through BAS. Masterful.

An excellent run indeed Al, and an excellent path beyond Woking - unlike the usual plods! An example again of how Clan Line goes 'under the radar' that yours is the very first post regarding this train today, two-thirds into its outward journey!

Wayne Thompson and Clan Line at their best. Just shows what can be done within the 75 limit. Great starts and recovery from the Basingstoke check plus good uphill work. Wonderful to see so many of the old timers on board.

That’s a great location, but where, exactly, is St. John’s?

My footage of Clan Line doing 75mph on the fast line between Winchfield and Hook near Basingstoke. I also filmed her at Semley and Sherborne. Her performance today would have made John Farrow proud. I hope you enjoy the video.

Must have been a cracking run back - got significantly ahead of schedule for much of the way. My attempts to film it at Farnborough were thwarted by a cancelled train from Woking! Had to content myself with a serene departure shot there which just narrowly avoided being obscured by an arriving train.

UK Railtours are proud to present an incredibly special train to celebrate and remember the life of a great railwayman, respected businessman and true gentleman.

John’s involvement with railtours first began when he was working for British Rail, running occasional tours for the Lea Valley Railway Club. This was followed by the formation of Hertfordshire Railtours and later UK Railtours, which under his command both proved to be hugely successful and respected names in the charter train world.

Sadly John passed away on Sunday 19th April 2020, having contracted Covid-19 while at The Royal Free Hospital in London where he was being treated for bowel cancer. As is befitting, all profits generated by today’s train will be donated to The Royal Free Charity.

Our special train will be hauled throughout by a steam locomotive that would have worked through Sherborne on a regular basis in the days of steam, Merchant Navy Class 35028 ‘Clan Line’. As one of John’s favourite locomotives, an image of Clan Line takes pride of place on the memorial plaque where his ashes lie and so it is very fitting for today’s train.

    RIP John Farrow.

A simply great day and the biggest sadness is that John Farrow wasn't around to enjoy it as well. But if today was a salute to him then Clan Line played its part brilliantly.
