So in the next couple of months the NRM can correctly state that "Elvis has left the building"...

Yet another step forward to a return to traffic today with the cod mouth door and chimney cowl fitted. Primer and undercoat is now being applied in readiness for painting at LSL paint shop in Crewe. The NRM workshop is a hive of activity with several other less visible projects under way by the Trust's volunteer engineering team.

Another week on towards the return to traffic and the new cladding panels at the front of the boiler have had primer applied whilst the panels at the back including the cab have been rubbed down in readiness for a coat of undercoat. Some welding work where the cab and boiler meet is being undertaken and on the footplate final pieces to the jigsaw puzzle of pipework are being fitted. 232913402_2088468904625992_8807586471968264758_n.jpg

I'm afraid I have to disagree. When I was a regular and frequent user of the railway I used to pass by Curzon Street Station in Birmingham and the sidings there were full of NPCSS vehicles of various types, including (occasionally) Gresley steel panelled BGs and very occasionally a Gresley RB could be seen at New Street alongside the Mk 1s and Mk2s. At Vauxhall and Duddeston, just before Curzon Street, there was a wagon repair depot with a myriad mixture of unfitted and fitted wagons undergoing repair in full view of the train. It wasn't like the heyday of the railways, where every local station had sidings full of wagons and sometimes an engine shunting, but there were still a lot more locomotive depots and station pilots at work. In a lot of places there were still signal boxes every mile or two, controlling semaphore signals. Industry at that time still used rail far more than it does now and there were private sidings with wagons and industrial shunters to be seen. So, yes, the railways have evolved and adapted to meet modern needs but there is far less of interest to be seen on the average journey, imho.

Loco is outside the workshop now, looking like it's in one piece (obviously still a lot of work to do before it steams). The loco has had a temporary repaint too...

The Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Trust is pleased to report that today our locomotive left the NRM workshop after a tremendous effort by our team to get it ready for transfer to the Locomotive Services Limited depot at Crewe where the overhaul will be completed.
During the overhaul a great deal of effort has gone into renewing sections and in some cases whole sheets of cladding. Prior to the decision to leave York the tender was in undercoat, and the locomotive in a mixture of undercoat, primer, bare steel with some badly scuffed sections in original blue. Although all the bare steel has been primed and full undercoat applied, time constraints led to this being done without full preparation meaning that the primer and undercoat will not prevent moisture attacking the steel i.e. they are not water resistant. This is not a problem in the controlled environment of the workshop but is a concern during the transfer to Crewe.
Considering the above we have applied a sealing coat of semi-gloss black paint to our locomotive; the paint was applied without the normal preparation of the underlying surface. This paint may disguise blemishes rather more than high gloss blue during the move but is unlikely to bear the close attention of a formal photo opportunity! The purpose of the paint is a transit protective measure only.
When we get the engine to Crewe our team will begin the work to finish it as promptly as possible.
A number of our long-term volunteers will not be able to regularly join the work at Crewe for a variety of reasons. Under the circumstances some decals have been applied to the engine before its roll out into the yard so that it looks like a complete entity. The front end will carry nameplates, shed plate 34A, and BR number 60007 on the mount on the cod’s mouth. The cab sides will carry transfers of the number 4498 and the tender letters LNER. Please note these are transfers not final quality lettering! This scheme represents the longevity and heritage of our engine via the numbers it has carried in service.
The Trust would like to thank all the volunteers who have worked extraordinarily hard in the last three months to get 60007 ready for transfer to Crewe compliant with the deadline to vacate the workshop. The Trust would like to give a special "thank you" to the volunteers who are unable to join the work at Crewe.
SNGLT recognises that an A4 in an approximation of wartime black livery is likely to generate significant interest. The Trustees and Directors have agreed that there will be an opportunity for our members to see the locomotive in black before it is painted into the BR Passenger Blue livery in which it will re-enter traffic. This event will be in Spring 2022 and details will be posted on the Members' page of our website in due course.
Issued by SNGLT Trustees, 25th August 2021.

Reading the latest newas of Gresleys' move, reminds me. Back in 1977 I saw her/him on the first leg of the trip from NCB/Lambton works in Philide;phia toSteamtown/Carnforth. I was still at school ast the time and dispite living along the street from the local comp which was a split site school and I went the other half on the otherside of my estate. With it beingmhigh up you could see across towards Sunderland and the "Old Mainline" [ECML] the Leamside line and saw/heard her quite a sight. It caused a bit of grief when Dad came home and I remarked, "I saw her first." His reply "Whio/what?" Me "Gresley leaving!" As he worked near the line in Gateshead as it swung round towards the High Level Bridge/Gateshead shed.......

29/4/77. Here is the loco passing Severus Junction (York Yard North) that afternoon for an overnight stay at the NRM 77-4-29 2 4498 Severus Jc copy.jpg

Later it posed alongside Mallard, before being positioned on the turntable inside the NRM as the backdrop of a dinner to celebrate the centenary of HNG's birth if I remember correctly. 77-4-29 22 4468 4498 copy.jpg

Next day it carried on to Carnforth at the head of a special.

Part of me is aghast at all that redundant capacity in the background of @torgormaig 's photo, and the other half is boggling at the sheer volume and variety of the old fat inefficient railway in comparison to the much slimmer and efficient, but drastically less interesting modern railways we have today… I'm always staggered when I see spotters looking at the stuff we have these days compared even to 30-40+years ago.

To show you what Simon means, here is a similar view taken three days ago while 60103 was undertaking a turning move prior to heading over to the East Lancs. The whole area of former railway land is to be redeveloped for non railway use. The area alongside the main line which curves to the left has already been cleared, so the NRM no longer has rail access to its South Yard. The remaining sidings with redundent stored Freightliner coal hoppers will also go in due course. A road off Water End will cross the main line to the left of this view to give unrestricted access to the site (at present the only road access is under one of the two low bridges at either end of Leeman Road). This view is going to look very different in a couple of years time.
